Of the three Lincoln-Douglas Debate sites that I have been to (Galesburg, Ottawa, and Freeport), Freeport has the best informational boards with period newspapers and explanations of the consequences of this debate (Douglas' Freeport doctrine -see Wikipedia or visit Freeport). Lincoln posed a question to Douglass that Lincoln knew how Douglas would answer. This doctrine lost Douglas many potential supporters... More

Debate Square is cool if you wander over from Union Dairy with your ice cream cone, but there isn't a lot to see as an attraction by itself.

Summer in Freeport offers some cultural treats, concerts at the Square are one of them. Situated between the library and Union Dairy, the park is really pretty darn small, and if you don't know what you're looking for, you could miss it. Parking free at library and across the street. Peaceful site.

Took grandkids there - they enjoyed it very much. Took lots of pics and rested on the park benches. Best part tho is the ice cream place right next door!

After seeing the Chicago Cubs World Series trophy at the Masonic Temple, my brother and I headed to the spot where Lincoln and Douglas had one of their debates. The City's water towers have the two on them so their influence is easily found. The two statues are the highlight plus the several information boards that are throughout the little... More

If you take the time to read all the signs you could spend some time here. It was pleasant and attractive, a great little park

The statues and aesthetics of this historical small park is a tribute to Freeport's past. Statues are wonderful, area is well taken care of, and quiet place to relax and learn more about Lincoln and Douglas.

We enjoyed walking about in this little square. The statues were very well done and there were plaques about that shared newspaper reproductions, political cartoons, etc., from the time of the famous debate. Reading the history of the events that took place here really drove home how important this area was during the years before and after the Civil War.... More

A very historic place next to Union Dairy in Freeport, IL. Great place to see speeches and hang-out in downtown.

We enjoyed stopping here and reading all the information on the posted signs about the Lincoln/Douglas debate. Nice small park. We also planned to visit the Union Dairy right there as well, but just our luck -- closed on Monday, which was the day we were there.

Thank Sherry C
