Heritage Canyon isn't what you think it is. It is a 12-acre wooded nature walk located just up the bank from the Mississippi River in Fulton, Illinois. It was a vision of a local man, Harold Wierenga, who built a miniature town representing Illinois in the good old days in an abandoned rock quarry. Wierenga constructed many small buildings depicting... More

This is a neat little self guided tour. Lots of historical items to view. Some of the area is not easily accessible if you have difficulty walking. Still lots of areas that are.

I have mixed feelings about Heritage Canyon. On the one hand, the transplanted 1800's village buildings are full of interesting objects from a time gone by. There are several to see, and they give visitors a peek into how people used to live and function before much of our modern technology changed many aspects of our way of life. On... More

Ran across a reference to this place on the internet and thought it might be interesting. So, while in the Fulton area to visit the windmill, my wife and I decided to go down 4th street to check it out. I'm glad we did. As stated in previous reviews, the entire "village" was constructed in an abandoned quarry but, nature... More

This is a visit back in time with lots of "How They Lived" type things. Very interesting. Learning how they lived, the tools they used and seeing these things would be good for kids.

This was an old quarry where different buildings have been brought in to make a little historic "village" to walk through. There are homes, stores, dentist and doctor office, school, chapel, etc. There is even a covered bridge and a log cabin. Lots of things to walk around and look at and learn a little history from mostly 1860's timeframe.... More

If you in the area, don't miss this place. Lots of interesting historical building and hiking trails. They have done a great job with it. The buildings are open to visitors only during special events, but it is still fun to look thru the windows. No cost to enter, but donations are suggested.

Nice place to visit but I would recommend going when they "come alive" in pioneer days. They dress up and have demonstrations. Otherwise you are just walking around closed buildings.

We had been to this attraction previously, but unfortunately they were closed, although we were still allowed to walk thru it. Since the weather wasn't the greatest then, (ice/snow on the trails), we couldn't see too much. This time we were able to go thru the whole canyon and we could see in all the buildings, as well as go... More
