This Italianate-style brick house, with original furnishings, looks very much as it did in 1865 when a group of townspeople presented it as a gift to Ulysses S. Grant on his victorious return from the Civil War.

Great Historic site

We loved our tour and learned much about Grant and his family. Site sits on top of the hill, overlooking the city. It's worth the visit.

The house was very well taken care of and our guide offered up a good amount of info about Grant and his family along with his history not only with his tenure in Galena but also as our President. It was a fun tour at a very good price.

As an American, we must learn as much as we can about our fore-fathers and how and what they did. Going to a birth place and learning about the childhood of this great American is a must. The town is also filled with history and what they did during the Civil War...a must stop for the entire family.

Enjoyed the tour. It was a bit on the quick side, but we arrived less than an hour before closing, so that may have been our misstep. It was fun to see so many of the original furnishings in the home. Staff were knowledgeable and thorough. They need to update their donations system, though (hint: paypal).

This is a must see while in Galena. Our tour guide knew just about everything you need to know about US Grant and his estate. Each tour group is small (we had 4 people in ours). The home is remarkable..they have done an amazing job of keeping it original.

Self guided tour of Grants Home. The clerk was a little short on words and seemed to be preoccupied. Upon entering the building, we were met at the door and told to hurry into the hologram room as it was about to start and then we could decide if we wanted to tour the building and check out the artifacts.... Very nice tour of history. The house is well preserved and a wonderful tour of all the rooms. The stairs are narrow but there are handrails to help going up and down

Galena’s Main Street is ½ mile of antique stores, boutique shops, galleries, and restaurants. More importantly, you will not find any big-box retailers or chain restaurants. Main Street looks very similar to the way it did 100 to 150 years ago. Galena has over 75 homes on the National Register of Historic Places. A visit to President Grant’s home should... More
