We LOVED the Garden of the Gods! It was our first trail in the Shawnee National Forest and, as soon as we set foot on the trail, we knew we were in one special place. The rocks are easily accessible via a well maintained and easy to walk path – and it felt amazing to be up so high and... More

This was our first stop on our Shawnee National Forest visit, and it was definitely beautiful. It was a gorgeous Wed. afternoon around 2 PM, and while it was the most trafficked hike of our stay, it wasn't overly crowded either. Without stopping for pictures, you could easily hike the entire loop in 20 min or less. We took our... More

Garden of the Gods is a great natural attraction that has no crowds due to its distance from civilization. The trail itself is very short and easy. The real fun is climbing on the large rock outcroppings that are everywhere. You can pretty much climb on anything that you want to.

We took a brief hike around the Observation Trail (1/4 mile), stopping along the way to hike in and among various out-croppings, including a little bouldering with a 7 year old boy and 4 13-year old girls. They all loved it, were ecstatic. This would be a great place to catch around sunset.

We decided to take an hour long detour to visit this place. It was a little crowded, but beautiful. All of our children enjoyed it and we had a nice picnic. The scenery is spectacular and it is different than what you think of in southern Illinois.

I am not a huge hiker but my fam is. A great trail to climb for me and the rest felt good in exploring off the path. Beautiful views.

We LOVED the Garden of the Gods! It was our first trail in the Shawnee National Forest, and we probably could have stayed there for hours! My son is a huge fan of climbing rocks, and this was an enormous playground for him. We both loved how accessible the rocks and ledges were, but it still felt amazing to be... More

This place is very open, and has interesting rock formation. It has very well paved walkways, and is very easy to walk to enjoy different scenes and layers of forest.

What a great place for just a short walk to some pretty scenery or a more energetic high into some of the most beautiful country and scenery around.

Even in the fog, this place was beautiful to see. Be careful walking on the cliffs when they are slippery. The views are wonderful. The walk around is about 45 to 60 minutes, but take your time and make sure to bring a camera!. We will return when the trees are going into Fall , I think that would be... More
