This smallish tongue-twistingly named village lies in Haut Vienne, close to the Charente border, on the (tourist) Route of Richard the Lionheart. Also known as Richard I, he was the English king who, with his followers, exercised great influence over the entire area in the late 12th century. The village is also on the pilgrimage route to Santiago de Compostela in northern Spain, so it must have been quite busy in those days!
These wall paintings are to be found in the church dedicated to Saint Eutrope, a large unmissable edifice close to the main road through the village (see photos) and commenced in the year 1075. Discovered by accident in 1986 during restoration work, these magnificent frescoes had remained unseen for hundreds of years behind stone walls! The themes, high quality and the richness of their colours make them unique in western Europe.Panels depict scenes from both the old and new testaments, as well as illustrations of the vices, greed, violence, vanity and lust, and the brutal death of Saint-Eutrope. Other frescoes on the south and north walls continue the themes with dedications to male and female martyrs. Well worth seeing if you are in the area. 30-60 minutes should suffice.

Probably the nicest and most striking thing about this Church is the unpolished nature in which it is kept. You feel like you have stepped back in time. There is no hiding from the stories of the past.
