Off-limits to the public for more than one hundred years, Cockatoo Island welcomes you to a new chapter in its long and illustrious story. Retaining all its character and heritage from decades of human endeavour by convicts and shipbuilders alike, Cockatoo Island has opened its doors to all, with a mission to re-energise history. Now a place to escape the everyday, a canvas for creatives and cultural events, the world’s first urban waterfront campground and beautiful holiday accommodation, Cockatoo Island has undergone a renaissance in every sense of the word.

As a Sydneysider, Cockatoo Island is one of my favourite places in Sydney to visit time and again. It’s so rich in history that I learn something new with each visit. The Bienniale of Sydney gave us an excuse to set foot on the island...More

Just ten minutes on the ferry the island is so easy to get to. Once there an adventure unfolds. There is so much history that we knew nothing of. Topped off with a glass of champagne by the water.

Amazing place with a violent history on many levels but the biennale installations were mostly inappropriate to the history of the buildings in which they were mounted and tended to be a distraction from the atmosphere The audio guide was good but many of the...More

Visited Cockatoo Island for Sydney Biennale. Artworks displayed in industrial setting of decommissioned shipyards on the island. Tunnels throughout the island provided a welcome relief from Sydney's heat and humidity. The ferry from Circular Quay is awesome and takes about 25 minutes if going via...More

We picked a great day to visit cockatoo island and the guide was very good. The views from the island are spectacular of Sydney and the harbor bridge. Well worth a visit if you have time.

Cockatoo Island is a work in progress as it changes from an ex-prison and industrial complex to a tourist attraction. But getting there by boat is fun! Avoid the Marina Cafe - poor management and long waits for food. Despite taking our name with our...More

Went to Elijah's kitchen evening 'a night at Wareamah'. Worth doing to learn about this fusion of food and meet some great chefs. Last ferry is 10.13pm otherwise a wait for 1 hour. Very interesting event.

In previous years they have had a funky bar with DJs during the spring & summer months, but it seems that it has been cancelled for this year, which is a real bummer.
