Worth checking out

They have a wonderful Canal Market every Sunday in one of their buildings. LaSalle County has a lot of Civil War era things to see, just down the road from a great state park.

Great array of locally found and donated items, now with second, adjacent building. Traces areas ties to river traffic and mining. Includes some artifacts from our granddad's arrowhead collection, or so he claimed.

We were staying in the Starved Rock area for several days and took a break in the town of Utica. We saw the museum and decided to stop in. If you have ever visited a small town historical society or other local-type small museum, you know pretty much what to expect. There were exhibits on the Lincoln-Douglas debate, some civil... More

Great place to visit and take out-of-town guests. Wide variety of artifacts. Much local and Illinois history.

There are two buildings - one for early LaSalle County, and then across the canal is the newer building with 20th century artifacts and stories. Wish we'd planned to come earlier. The docents in both buildings never seemed to run out of stories or answers. Even crossing the canal after closing time, one docent was kind enough to answer our... More

We were pleasantly surprised how much the museum had to offer, and how personable and interesting the docents were. The stone building housed older history through the end of the 1800's while the building just a short stroll over the canal bridge housed 1900's military, coal, clock, glass making history and more. I don't know when we've ever had more... More

Interesting museum with a variety of exhibits. Some folklore is interspersed in the guides' presentations, making good stories but not actually factual.

Did not expect the museum with all the artifacts from 1900-present to be so interesting. Never knew LaSalle County had so many famous figures and artifacts - liked the Coal Mine.

Here is a nice place to take the older kids to see some wonderful local historical artifacts. The staff are very knowledgeable and can keep inquisitive Tweens in awe for awhile. If your downtown Utica to eat or walk this place is right there and worth a walk thru.

We stayed at Starved Rock Lodge and decided to visit this the next morning. I am glad we did. We paid a minimal amount and ended up getting 2 tours. Both docents were very knowledgeable. If we had just walked thru both places we would really have missed out on good information. There are two museum buildings plus a school... More
