Had the opportunity to visit the boyhood home of Mr. Grissom. What a fantastic experience that turned out to be, spent well over an hour with 2 gentlemen, Steve and Anthony (Tony) who had a vast knowledge of Gus's career, relatives and friends of the family. There were a lot more original pieces in the house that belonged to the Grissoms than I had anticipated. Their interest of the Grissom name and personal involvement in the community ended up being the highlight of my trip to Mitchell. If you are interested in history, space or just want to learn something about a small town boy who followed his dreams and made them a reality then I would not hesitate to stop by the house and take a stroll back in time to this magical, quaint home. The museum is open every Saturday from 11a - 3p during certain months of the year, go check it out and enjoy this unknown piece of American history.

Virgil I. "Gus" Grissom is the hometown hero of our little town of Mitchell. As one of the first Americans to fly into space, we are glad and proud that Virgil called Mitchell his home. He is one of three astronauts from Lawrence County.

The house that Gus grew up in is still here –  opening its doors for people to glimpse into the past to see how this astronaut grew up.

This building stands as a monument to the pioneering spirit of American, and should not be disregarded.

This facility's times are Saturday only, 11:00 AM to 3:00 PM, May through to October.

While you're at it, check out the Gus Grissom Memorial at the entrance to Spring Mill State Park. It's free and worth a visit.

Right off the way to Spring Mill State Park and Grissom Memorial. Can view from car. Tours are available on different days and times (inquire before visit). Very interesting and great little addition to your trip.

This modest home is where astronaut Gus Grissom lived with his family from age 2 through high school. It is now a museum and provides an interesting look into Grissom's life before he became an Air Force pilot and eventually one of the Mercury 7 astronauts. It is decorated with period furnishings, including many original to the Grissom family - even some cabinets, etc. made by Grissom's father. There are also a number of artifacts that belonged to the future astronaut - his first shotgun, a knife and sheath that he made in shop class, etc.

The home can only be toured with a docent - but this is great as these are local people who have a lot of knowledge to share and are quite enthusiastic and friendly. We probably spent more time talking with them than touring the house, talking about not only the Grissom family but the development and care of the home as a museum and even their future museum plans.

The only downside is that the home is normally only open 11 - 3 on Saturdays from Memorial Day through October, although it may be possible to arrange a visit by appointment at other times. There is no fixed admission fee, but donations are accepted.

This is an excellent complement to the memorial museum out at Spring Mill State Park which focuses more on Grissom's Air Force and NASA careers. While you're in Mitchell, be sure to also visit the memorial - basically a stylized miniature reproduction of a Titan/Gemini launch vehicle made from Indiana limestone (what else?) - a couple blocks up the street by the municipal building. It sits on the site of the elementary school that Grissom attended - the wall around it is made from bricks from the school.

This was a great stop on the way to the museum. Make sure you stop on Saturday since this is the only day they are open. We had a very nice lady who was knowlagable of the house and his family. They did a very good job of bringing it back to life. A must stop.

What the TripAdvisor app doesn't say is that the house is only open on Saturday for tours. I had to google search the site for that information. The outside has been restored and looks great, however, since they were not open it was hard to judge how good of a tour this might have been. For those folks who may be camping or staying at the lodge at Spring Mill on the weekend you have the option of taking a tour. Those of us who come on a any other day but Saturday we are out of luck.

I wanted to stop by and share his history with my daughter. She was a little interested when we got there and I wished we could have taken a tour. It's easy to find right off main street downtown area. The house has been maintained but there are some issues that could be taken care. The porch looks like it was redone but some windows needed repair and trash around the yard and porch could have been taken away. Broken planters on the porch remained as well. All the windows were curtained so you can't see inside either. Not that I would know what we were looking at. It it is fun to stop and read the memorial and google all about him to have that teaching moment with your kids.

We didn't have a chance to go in but we drove by. Contrary to how he is sometimes depicted in movies, Gus Grissom was a very important figure in the history of the US space program. What many people don't know is that Deke Slayton had already picked Gus to be the first man on the moon prior to his death in Apollo 1. It is nice to see this piece of history restored and maintained to honor an important person.

Grissom's boyhood home has been nicely restored with interesting stories about where and how his family lived. Many items were original to the home and given back to the home. The lady who told us about his home was well versed in its history. Very interesting. A must see finish out the history of Gus Grissom.
