If you are a big Buddy Holly fan this is basically a roadside stop off interstate 35 just west of Mason City, Iowa. Googlemaps will get you there, look for the big Buddy Holly glasses. Then you walk just under a half mile through a...More

It's a very nice memorial. Can't believe how long it has been! It's also very nice of the land owner to keep a path mowed to the site, which is a bit of a walk from the road. We were there during nice weather, but...More

Get your picture taken by the Buddy Holly Glasses. The drawback to this sight is the hike. It is about 1/4 mile hike at the edge of a cornfield. The land owner generally keeps the path mowed. It will be muddy after a rain. The...More

If you went to the Surf Ballroom, this tops off the tour. Very well kept! Although people apparently disregarded the request not to leave things the day we were there, which led up to a bunch of clutter. Please be considerate, the property the crash...More

Wear a hat if you're out in the heat of summer as it's about 1/2 mile each way. The landowner has kindly kept a path to the memorial so be respectful during your time on his property. Lots of people leave something behind, which can...More

I couldn't resist stopping since we were nearby. Almost felt like I was visiting a cemetery at night. If you're a fan or are familiar with the events, then it may be worth it; if you aren't, then you won't be impressed.

Even if you liked Buddy Holly, it's just a field with some flowers and stuff marking the site. I wasn't impressed. Better to listen to his music than some macabre fascination with where he died.

Always wanted to visit the site of the air accident singer Don McLean memorialized in his song; "American Pie." The crash site is in a farmer's field a few miles north of Clear Lake, Iowa, and about a quarter mile hike from Gull Avenue. The...More

A bit of a dirt road walk in a cornfield so wear walking shoes. Play some tunes from buddy holly, Richie valance. The songs are classics and legends were lost.

We are a little older and slower since the last visit but wouldn't miss visiting. We are old enough to remember the sad event and it was truly 'the day the music died'.

You should also visit the Surf Ballroom - the site of their last show. It's close to the crash site.

The Clear Lake boat area has spots for parking and staying, by the way and it's not far from the downtown area. You might have checked that already but just in case--yes, there is a place if you want to stay. Maybe you might... More
