Best time to go is Christmas time. Several groups volunteer to decorate christmas trees and put them in each room as per the theme. This a must see when you come to Council Bluffs even if it's not Christmas. Rooms are decorated as per the era.

The house was beautifully restored and the docents were very informative about the the Dodge family and the house itself. An Iowa treasure.

You may not have heard of General Grenville M. Dodge. But you've probably heard of Dodge City, Kansas, the town that was named after Dodge. A veteran of the Civil War, Dodge was an associate of many of the most influential Americans of his time and a counsel to presidents of the United States, including Lincoln and Grant. The chief... Not only was the house elegant, with an excellent recorded tour to explain the furnishings, but learning about General Dodge's life and career was fascinating. Photography not allowed inside, but really pretty. Also includes tour of house next door which was owned by another family of the time. Discount coupon available on entertainment online; low admission price either way. Well... More

I had never heard of this place before arriving in the Omaha area, but it's worth a stop if you're interested in history. The staff is very friendly and knowledgeable, and the items in the home are mostly original and well kept. There's plenty of information about the family and the era. The nursery is kind of creepy yet intriguing.... More

If you have an interest in art, history and architecture this is a nice little stop. Not so good if you have young kids. Constantly telling my 5-year old not to touch, 60+ year old mother-in-law did not want to leave.

This site takes one back to the early days of Council Bluffs (Kanesville) and the surrounding area. General Grenville Dodge is the focus here.

This tour actually includes 2 homes and the cost for viewing both is very reasonable. You can tour with a guide or on your own. I recommend watching the video on this history if you plan to tour the home on your own.
