This was the mansion of a very wealthy cosmetics businessman. He wanted an old looking house, so he built it to look old. He also bought a house in England, disassembled some of it (fireplaces), moved it to Des Moines, and had it reassembled. The...More

This is a fine example of the prosperous 1920's. Amazing medieval type construction right in the heart of Des Moines. We did the self guided tour, and saw most of the house.

Check the times for a 90-minute guided tour. It's only a little bit more than the self-guided tour, but you get a ton of information to put the house in context. The rooms themselves don't have any plaques, etc. to give you the background so...More

Absolutely stunning representation of 1500's England in 1920's Iowa. The first step through the arched entry is breathtaking. I've never been in a nicer area waiting for the guided tour to begin. Fascinating history of the buildings the architectural pieces came from.

It is amazing that tucked away in an unsuspecting neighborhood there is this very ornate mansion with so much history. People live around and don't even know about it. It really is a gem!
