Historic cable car. Also known as the Fourth Street Elevator, this funicular railway has been called "the world's steepest, shortest scenic railway." Great view of downtown Dubuque, the Mississippi River and 3 states. Buses should go to the bottom of the bluff. Please use 4th and Bluff Streets for GPS. Narrow streets with parking on both sides at the top of the bluff. Open 8 AM to 10 PM daily April 1 though November 30. Closed Thanksgiving. We do not accept debit or credit cards.

Just some simple, nice fun to have an amazing view!
Oct 2021
This place is so cool and fun! I know, it's simple, and it's nothing massive, but just so nice and simple to see these views. We were here for a college visit, and it was just something quick to do in the morning before we spent time at the school.

Yes, it's nothing exciting, but that's kind of what makes it fun. It's something a little old school. The history behind it is neat too. Once you get to the top, there is a residential area up there too, so you could walk around up there as well. We just hung on the small patio/landing that they have up there.

I would recommend it if you've got some time. And I'm sure it's beautiful at night!

When in Dubuque. . .
Oct 2021
This is a must-do when you are in Dubuque. It's a piece of Iowa history that you should experience. It only costs $4.00 for the round trip and the view from the top is breathtaking. If you are not a fan of heights or elevators this might not be for you.

The view is great.

Thank you for the view. We did not ride the trolley, however, it is a fascinating machine. The view of downtown Dubuque is great.

Just ok
Oct 2021
Don't know what I expected but nothing thrilling or novel, the person taking money was rude and very short with customers, not a good fit in that kind of job.

Down... then Up.
Jul 2021
It was a nice day. We went down, then we went back up. It had a nice oily machine smell. I wish there was something more to do at the bottom, maybe a place for coffee would be nice. But that's not the elevator's fault. I like the elevator.

A Unique Piece of History!
Sep 2021
I had heard about this attraction for years and finally had the chance to experience it. Was not disappointed! What's not to like about a funicular railway??? The cars were clean and neat, and the view from the top superb! Best $4 I ever spent!

Kids would love this
Sep 2021
Take a ride on this unusual, private elevator. Only 8 people can ride at a time and the view from the top is worth it. Some people like walking round the neighborhood. Kids would love this. There are some nice shops at the bottom, and I especially enjoyed the Fair Trade shop which give the artisans fair prices for their goods.

Interesting little attraction
Sep 2021
This was an interesting little attraction - $4 roundtrip to ride. The view from the top is pretty stunning, as you can see downtown, to the riverfront, across the river, etc. Only takes a couple minutes to ride - so take the time to say you did!

Short, but fun ride.
Aug 2021
This is a must see experience. Very reasonably priced trip to the top of a steep bluff. You ride up the tracks in a wooden car. Spend as much time as you want enjoying the panoramic view below, then go back down in the same wooden car. Great view from the top, but the trip is probably the best part.

Kids and adults both seem to like it. Not many similar things in other places around the country.

Highly recommended.

Family with young kids
Sep 2021 • Family
Perfect excursion for families! We had 4 kids-11, 8, 3, and 6 months old. We fit a family of 6 in this elevator. Switch the stroller out for a baby carrier. Pay at the top. Park at the top along the neighborhood streets. Very scenic views at the top-enjoy it all in and as you get into the elevator to go down, you kinda get the scenic views because the elevator window trims kinda block the view a little. But it’s such a cute elevator ride up and down. Looks and sound not sturdy but once you’re in it, you will feel how sturdy and strong this elevator still is. At the bottom of the elevator, you can get off and explore a little on foot. There are a few shops there. We stopped at an ice cream shop right off the elevator and it was the cutest little ice cream shop. Has some souvenirs like t shirt, shot glass, and mug along with some generic stuffed animals. This activity maybe took our family about 1 hour to 1.5 hour. Save time to explore more of Dubuque after the elevator ride and drive around the town.
