Best Dam View view of the lock and dam
Feb 2021
Best Dam View view of the lock and dam on the Mississippi River from the heights of Dubuque. Check out the charming Frank Lloyd Wright style park buildings and the many trails. It's as pretty a hike in the winter as summer because they plough the paths.

A Real Gem!
Sep 2021
A wonderfully landscaped arboretum with many unusual tree species and very attractive formal gardens, all well maintained. Even this late in the season the beds still looked wonderful. Very pleasant to stroll through, and you can't beat free admission! One of those great spots where a person could spend a half hour or all day depending on their inclination, and love it!

Fantastic gardens, highly recommended.

This is my third trip to this garden. In summary, it is spectacular. While I would have expected to pay $5 to $10 per person, it is free. That makes it even more surprising.

There are several different areas and each is great on it's own and even better when grouped together in one experience. Don't miss feeding the fish in the pond, it is fun to see them swarm for the food. That is 25 cents per portion and is the only thing you pay for, other than the gift shop.

The grounds are very well kept and everything was nice on my visits. If you want to relax a bit, I recommend the deck off the upper floor of the visitor center. Personally, I could sit there for hours just relaxing.

The only down side is that some of the areas may be challenging for wheelchairs. There is a lot to see if you are mobility challenged, but some areas, like the pond, are difficult or more for those guests.

Highly recommended.

A peaceful and calm place.

The arboretum is a very quite and peaceful place. Was not crowded on the day we arrived. Some concrete pathways but mostly trails. Well kept and clean. Worth the stop for all!

Nice visit
May 2021
Beautiful gardens although difficult to walk without a path/walkway (we had a stroller). The map is a bit outdated and difficult to understand, but we enjoyed our short visit to the site.

Very beautiful gardens just starting to bloom for spring. Lovely pathways to meander around the whole place.

Free Place To Take A Nice Walk
Apr 2021
Had a Japanese Garden feel in part of it... Then there was an English Garden in another area. I really liked it and the way it was laid out even though when we were there for Easter the only things blooming were daffodils and alpine bells.

Small but well donoe

My wife has a career in horticulture so we tend to stop and places like this when we are in other towns. It is a smallish place, but a very good variety and well done. Worth the visit.

Small and Lovely
Oct 2020
After all of the damage from the Dercho in Cedar Rapids, we decided to drive north to find some trees that weren't damaged for some autumn color, and this was the perfect place. It was a cold, drizzly day, but we still enjoyed seeing some of the last blooms of color, the waterfall in the Japanese Garden and the vibrant leaves scattered along our path.

Dubuque surprise!
Sep 2020
We were so impressed with the gardens and site. There is a lovely gift shop with a huge deck to relax on and enjoy the view. There was a Koi pond where kids could feed the fish and the fish would all gather. There was a scene from The Three Bill Goats Gruff with a troll statue and the billy goats. It was a relaxing and fun time.
