Beautiful architecture, rich history, kind staff. We made a point to tour the Old Capital in between doctor appointments, but when we got there the front and back doors were locked; we were disappointed. We walked around to the side to take more pictures and saw a different entrance. As I was reading the sign that said they were closed... More

The Old Capitol was lovingly restored in the 1970s to its origins as the Iowa Statehouse. Visitors can see the reverse spiral staircase, view the Senate Chambers and the House, as well as offices and some displays. The building was deeded to the (State) University of Iowa when the legislature removed the capitol to Des Moines in 1856. The building... More

My first visit here was when I was a kid as part of a school excursion. It was the first time that I had ever been in such a building, so for me it was a big deal. Like a lot of these places, they're good making what otherwise might appear as something borderline dull, as very interesting, unique and... More

Came to Iowa city to visit a friend and ended up swinging downtown to visit the historical value of the city. Learned that Iowa City use to be the capital and included the capital building. The whole area was very nice and included pleasant trees and immaculate grass.

Lots to see and walk around. Old Capitol has lots to look at for the kids. Get away from games for a while.

The University owns the Old Capitol and it's been restored beautifully. If you get a chance to tour it, do! If you're a history buff, you won't regret it. If you like old historic buildings and architecture, you will love this.

We didn't know much of anything about Iowa's history before popping in here to look around. Very nice, easy to see museum aspect that fills you in on some basic Iowa history. Well done.

Loved being able to see close hand the court system, legislative room, and all offices encompassing the functions of a capitol.

This restored Capitol of the Iowan Territory captures the elegance of a lost era. The former home of a leglative ghost is worth a stop to imagine life on an old fontier.
