Prairie Lights Book store is an Iowa City landmark for decades. Not only they have fantastic book collections and can order any book one may desire but it also hosts many readings throughout the year including hosting famous writers discussing their latest publications. It also has a unique coffee house with fun foods. It is a must go to destination.

There is no quick visit to this place. It seems small until you start browsing and realize the books there are not necessarily the trendy books, but actual, GOOD books. Books you didn't realize existed and those you forgot you loved. As one reviewer put it, bring your plastic. No joke. I was thankful that we drove in rather than... More

This bookstore is always one of the highlights of my visits to Iowa City. They stock so many unique books, they have wonderful readings, and they are always helpful if you're looking for something specific. Very knowledgeable and just a joy to spend time perusing. They also have unique gifts and journals.

Lots of unusual books, and I get travel books here often. The staff is knowledgeable, kind and determined to help you. The children's section in the basement is fabulous. The coffeeshop upstairs is quite and a great place to meet friends and have some tea and a snack while you look at the books you bought.

A real bookstore! With real book smells, real paper pages to turn, real volumes to hold and experience. Places to sit while you browse. Frequent opportunities to meet authors. With so many bookstores shuttered forever, it's an experience not to be missed. A definite highlight of a visit to Iowa City, and a treasure for those of us who live... More

Prarie Lights is a bloved institution in IC. They have a wide selection of books and hold author readings, often by successful writers from IU, many evenings a week. The staff is quite knowledgeable and not snooty. While they have every kind of book, if you just want a mainstream summer read, they don't look down at you but help... More

I wish there was a profound way of describing why an high quality, smart independent bookstore is just a delight. When, as you are checking out the selections you see so many interesting titles and so many authors you have told yourself you should read something by, you keep saying "I just get this, too," you realize why a place... what an incredible bookstore. Good bookstores, or any book store is so hard to find but Prairie Lights is a true find. a very wide selection of great books. I could have spent a great deal of money in there! They also have readings I believe and a very nice coffee shop hidden upstairs

A real find to stumble across. Walked out with four books between the four of us. Found something for everyone with engaging displays.

Prairie Lights is one of the best of its kind anywhere. The wide selection is intelligently chosen and the staff are amazingly knowledgeable about books and authors. I am fearless about asking them anything, including, "Give me a book that is good to read before going to sleep". Their choices are original, apt and surprising. .See their book reviews on... More
