The Loess (finely deposited windblown soil) Hills extend about 200 miles, are only about 15 miles at their widest point, and are the second highest in the world (only larger ones are in China). The main byway is all paved, extends roughly 225 miles from Sioux City, Iowa south to St. Joseph, Missouri and has "excursion loops", some paved and... More

My sister and I traveled this Byway from Council Bluffs to Akron. What a beautiful ride it was. Rolling green hills and a well marked route. I bet it is beautiful in the fall.

Not sure why we had a hard time navigating the byway.....missed travel high signs a few time...not well marked. The state Iowa map was not helpful.

Well worth the drive. Lots of nice scenery to see from the vehicle during the drive. Services along the way are sparse, so be sure to start out with a pretty full tank of gas and maybe a sammich and drink. Take your time, drive a bit slower than the posted speed limit (pull over or allow others to pass... More

We may be jaded as we're on a long road trip and have seen some gorgeous scenic byways that were far superior to this drive. That said, there is a nice look out spot on the route that gives great views of the hills. The towns along the way look run down with a lot of potential if just given... More

I was on a bus tour of the area. Such a beautiful part of Iowa. Also visited the Loess Hills Lavender Farm along with the Sawmill Hollow organic farm which produces organic aronia berries. We were given several different samples of aronia items which were delicious. Never heard of those berries. We also had the option of buying their reasonably... More

I had driven by the hills on a few visits to Omaha, but decided to drive through them after my conference ended and I had some time to kill. What a nice scenic and relaxing drive! I was trying to reach a particular destination, and when I missed it, I simply followed the signs for the scenic byway and caught... More

We stopped at the visitor center of the Loess hills on our way to Fremont NE. We were the only ones there at the time. The lady in charge of the center was from the area so was very informative. The displays were very well done and explained the formation of the hills. Very glad we stopped.

We were driving in western Iowa on the Lincoln highway and saw the visitor center and in a split secon decision thought we would stop. Lots of information about Iowa travel and snacks, drinks and a back area with all sorts of historic farming equipment. Much better to stop here than a gas station to use the facilities and learn...
