Do stop at the information center to get a map to have an idea of how large this place is. I had photographed 150 species of birds, but found a couple new ones here. It is great that folks do not litter here. I saw Marbled Godwit and improved my photo of Double-crested Cormorant.

Cheyenne Bottoms is a unique wetlands and refuge offering excellent birdwatching, especially during migrations. It is easy to get to and easy to drive around. Unfortunately, state funding has apparently been ended and all 3 employees are gone. This site is too important to lose due to funding. We hope that grants can be obtained to preserve this refuge for... More

Easy self-drive on gravel roads. You can see most of it in about 3 hours but better if you have all day.

The scope of the wetlands was astounding to us. We were so glad to see that much land being set aside for nature.

One of the hotel staff recommended i check out Cheyenne Bottoms. Being from Louisiana, i was surprised to find a wet land in the middle of Kansas! The staff were friendly and knowledgeable. I learned a ton from them. They really went above and beyond!

Exceeded all expectations. Nicely done around a natural body of water. If one stops the car, the birds offer a cacophony of sound. Ducks diving for food, sea gulls gliding, herons near the shore looking for food. The Best thing is the welcome center. VERY nicely appointed, modern, clean. Excellent displays, and even live animals for representation. Different snakes that... More

Depending on the time of year, this wetlands can be fairly quiet or seriously full and noisy. In July it is fairly quiet, but still beautiful and a great place to find birds of all kinds. The bugs were seriously awful when exiting the car, however. Take bug spray! You can do the entire wetlands by car or you can... More

Very nice visitor center. Well organized displays with a friendly ranger and pretty wild flowers in front. Easy to walk nature trail. The drive through the preserve is easy and we enjoyed the water, grasses and birds.

My sister and I were sightseeing in the area and decided to finally do it. We went to the nature center first for information and then we drove to the place where they have wooden bleachers and you can see all kinds of birds landing and leaving the great large water refuge. We didn't want to leave the area because... More

We drove through here on our way home from vacation because my husband used to work for a company that was responsible for the lift stations as this nature preserve. It was so serene to just drive through here and see all the birds on the water. I could have spend hours here just enjoying nature.
