The number of visitors to the post has dropped off significant since enhanced security measures have gone into effect. The plus side of this is that crowds are much smaller than before. On the other hand, if you don't have some sort of military ID, you must follow the signs to the visitors center and register. Before making the trip,... More

Took a 45 minute drive around the Fort, visitors can check in at the visitors center(6:30 am to 4:30pm), using a state issued identification and another form of ID such as fishing license, marriage certificate, social security card, passport. A clerk will present an embossed certification for access. The drive is beautiful as you can see not only the federal... More

We have traveled over all the base numerous times as we go to the commissary when we can. I love going down the streets. They are a bit narrow, but that just adds a little bit more quaintness to the base. The Buffalo Soldier Monument is totally awesome and the museums are fantastic. They have a pond area and if... We had a guided tour arranged by our son in law who is a major in the US army based at Fort Leavenworth. His in depth knowledge of the history of this impressive military facility made for a memorable visit. The base is set in beautiful rolling countryside and all buildings and highways are maintained to a very high level.... More

A must see if you are in the Leavenworth area, or just 35 minutes from KC. It was our first time visiting, and we enjoyed it. Bring your camera. Attractive, historic military base. We liked driving through the base and pointing out the history and attractive architecture to our kids. My husband and I were impressed by the rich history,... More

This is a gorgeous military facility. Curving streets, lovely views of the Missouri River, wooded hills announce that this is no ordinary fort. Magnificent trees provide deep and welcome shelter from the Kansas sun. The grounds are studded with beautiful old red brick buildings (some of which are housing for lucky residents). Other buildings are painted a buttery yellow. Everything,... More

As a civilian, visiting Fort Leavenworth is difficult at best. However, if you're afforded the opportunity, the base is impressive. Numerous memorials to the great military leaders and transformative military units such as the Buffalo Soliders. Located in the back of the base is the Disciplinary Barracks were service members from all branches serve prison sentences following court martials. The... More

First if you are not Active Duty/Guard/Reserve/Retired or family of one of these getting on to the installation can be a process. This is an Active Duty Military Installation and security is crucial to those living there and those visiting. Since it is a process dealing with the visitor center to get a day pass can be like going to... More

While Ft. Leavenworth is a GREAT friendly, family-oriented facility for military families, the Visitor Center leaves a LOT to be desired. The visitor center personnel seem to be on a POWER TRIP to see just how many folks they can inconvenience over a LONG period of time of wait. Having been there three times already to visit family, the personnel... More

In order to access the history of Ft. Leavenworth you need to be active or retired military. There's a lot of history on the post and especially loved the Buffalo Soldiers Memorial Park which honored the black soldiers during the Civil War. If u can find it there is a museum on post, the Frontier Army Museum, that has a... More
