Google maps on my phone took us right there. If you make it to the oil well, head west for the smoother road. We drove a small non-4WD SUV there on a dry day. I think a regular car could have made it on this...More

The roads here are impassable when wet. We were in a Prius and came in the back way and the road is barely there. Rough terrain. We walked around the area but did not go to the hoodoos. It makes for some cool pics but...More

This was such a fun and interesting place to visit, considering how flat the rest of the state is. We also discovered a multitude of wildflowers everywhere as well. As it was so totally isolated, it was quite peaceful as well.

Castle Rock was made from the chalk formations when the inland sea in the area receded. It is fast changing due to nature. Not sure how long we will be able to enjoy this fantastic view.

Road tripping back roads across kansas, this one was definitely on my radar. So happy i came here. Very cool formations and scenic views. One of kansas 8 wonders, but definitely off the beaten path. Gravel roads to get to it, and somewhat rough roads...More

Just got back from Castle Rock. It is a lovely place that is worth spending several hours but if you only have 15 minutes it would be worth the drive to get there. As one reviewer already said, the drive getting there is worth it,...More

We enjoyed seeing Castle Rock and the surrounding area - even sharing the road with the cows. We almost missed it, however, because the sign leading to the rocks was nearly obscured by weeds. Also, the road into the site is a little rough, so...More

Castle Rock is kind of off the beaten path on a dirt road. The drive to Castle Rock is as enjoyable as the rock itself! Beautiful fields on either side of the road, which is about 1.5 car widths wide. There are signs that direct...More

Kansas was suppose to be this "fly by" state, boring and void of interest. We found that to be so untrue! If you're willing to take a few hours and get off of I-70, there a true treasures here. Castle Rocks were one of those...More

Like Chimney Rock in Colorado, Castle Rock in Kansas has been used as a landmark for several hundred years, by American Indians, Conquistadors, mountain men, explorers, military and settlers heading West. In the 1800s, Butterfield Overland Dispatch followed the Smoky Hill Trail which passed just...More

I was there near dusk and we took some awesome photos even with the growing shadows. I think the cliffs face mostly north-northeast. The road does make a complete circle but we found the west side to be much more navigable... More
