Ward Hall is an architectural treasure and a must see in central Kentucky. With a fascinating history, Ward Hall tells a story of Kentucky history that is intriguing. The preservationists who have adopted this project are to be commended for their efforts to preserve the house and to share its significance. We have visited this property several times and each time, significant improvements have been completed. Visit this home and support the work of those who are working to improve it and to share it.

Ward Hall is a magnificent Greek Revival Mansion nestled in the heart of the Bluegrass, near Georgetown, Ky. Tours are available the first weekend of every month May through November and Memorial Day and Labor Day weekends, the Fourth of July, and several weekends prior to Christmas including candlelight tours.
The docents are extremely knowledgeable of the building and can keep a raging teen interested for an hour. Tours are leisurely and at your own pace. Their are stairs to climb, but no elevator. Just a tour of the main floor (though you have to climb the outside steps) is worth it. There is a $5 admission which goes to the preservation and upkeep of the place.
The house features many unique architectural details from the cast iron Corinthian capitals on the columns, the Nautilus stairwell and the lead resevoir on the roof for hot water to the herring bone patterned brick floors in the basement "servants" quarters.
The private foundation preserving this mansion has gone to great lengths to furnish it with authentic period pieces, though few if any pieces original to the house exist.
Go to their website (which doesn't offer a lot of information other than contact and tour dates) to arrange a private or school tour. For anyone remotely interested in fine southern architecture, this place is well worth spending a Saturday or Sunday afternoon.
Living in a culture bent on destroying its history, it is fantastic that some forward-thinking folks got together to preseve Ward Hall before it was torn down and absorbed by the cancerous plastic subdivisions surrounding it.

Ward Hall is open for tours only the first weekend of every month. The tour guides are very knowledgeable about the history of this home. Keep in mind that this house has not been restored in any way; it is at the beginning process of being preserved so it looks a little run down. The furniture inside is the original furniture that was in the home. the grounds are nice and they host events here throughout the year. I believe you can donate or join to help in the preservation of this old home. It would be a shame to lose such a nice piece of history.
The only negative I can see for some people is that there are lots of stairs so if you are not able to climb, skip this one. Otherwise, please go see it! It's worth it!

Wow! What a sight to see! An unbelievable history filled home. Nothing in the tour of the home is off limits from the basement to the attic on the fourth floor!! The house has been stripped down to its barest beauty awaiting restoration to its original glory by the dedicated volunteers. Join the grand endeavor to restore this monumental piece of architecture, history and heritage! You must visit this home in order to grasp the excitement of seeing the past brought to life. Open the first weekend of each month and by appointment.

This place is amazing. Our tour was so personalized. You could feel his passion. It is not a museum. It is more like a recently opened time capsule. Fabulous!!! If you love historic places you will love it.

I was unaware of this place until I went there on a tour. I expected a dilapidated house from what I had read, but most of it was in really good shape. The tour was excellent and the house itself was beautiful. The guy who did our tour was also really good. Seeing the slave quarters was pretty eye-opening when you compare it to how the Ward family was living. You get to see every room from the basement all the way up to the attic (which, i must say, would have been hot to live in in July).I look forward to coming back as they continue restoration efforts.

This was an interesting old home. There was so much history there! There were 26 of us there. I loved everything about Ward Hall, but especially the basement! The yards and grounds were beautiful! So nice to see people who want to keep these historic homes preserved. It is a well, hidden gem!

My wife, three adult children, and I toured Ward Hall on 5/7/2022. The tour was excellent! Our guide, Mr Bryant, is a retired college history teacher, and there seems to be no limit to the knowledge he has about the house and it's history. With a good bit of humor mixed in, he made the whole tour a lot of fun. The house, itself, has a fascinating history, intertwined with Civil War, slavery, extreme wealth and sudden fall of wealth, of some of societies highest people, 150+ years ago.
I highly recommend this tour!
The cost was $10 per adult, and I suppose we were there about 2 hours.....it was so fascinating, I lost track of time!

Ward Hall is thought to be the most intact antebellum home in the south. The entire home is shown on a tour, basement to attic. No areas are off-limits to visitors! The tour guides are very informative and welcome questions from visitors. A true treasure! Be sure to go at Christmas--the candlelight tours are unforgettable.

I would suggest going to their website or even calling them. They do not have regular hours but are open for special events...admission may vary depending on the event.

Is this tour appropriate for children? What can we do as parents to help our children enjoy the tour?
Written 27 July 2018
This tour is great for kids who are interested in history. Small children get bored very quickly, so I would advise not to bring them. As parents, you may want to go to the Ward Hall web site for some background information for the children to read. Parents may want to take their kids to the bathroom before coming, as there are no restrooms (or any plumbing) at Ward Hall. Most children like the tour and are encouraged to ask questions. Many young visitors ask about ghosts! Ward Hall has had a few ghost sightings and there is a slave graveyard near the mansion.
