- Pam B1 contributionFantastic tour in a beautiful settingOut of the several distilleries that we toured, Maker's Mark got top marks. Our guide Tim, took us through the process of making great bourbon with great details, answered questions easily, explained what to look for in tasting, and shared his enthusiasm for Maker's Mark. The setting was beautiful, and the staff was friendly. This tour should be on everyone's bourbon trail trip.Visited October 2023Travelled with friendsWritten 3 October 2023
- Garrett ZNashville, Tennessee4 contributionsA wonderful experience! One of our favorite distillery visits! We did a full tour and tasting. Our tour guide, Josie was wonderful and full of great info regarding the family, property, and whiskey making process. The grounds were incredible and rival the likes of similar sized distilleries like Buffalo Trace, Jim Beam, etc. The tasting included makers regular, cask strength, 46, and a private selection. Would have loved it to include access to more premium offerings like BEP or Cellar Aged, but was satisfied to find it available for tasting at the bar. Would absolutely recommend making a trip out there to visit the property and the restaurant onsite for lunch!Visited October 2023Travelled as a coupleWritten 15 October 2023
- Lori U7 contributionsMaker's Mark sets the bar high.Maker's Mark is nestled in beautiful KY farming country. The subtle and elegant integration of contemporary art alongside oak barrels and family heirlooms is quite sophisticated. Our guide, Jeremy, gets 10 stars for his knowledge, friendliness and genuine interest in our "good time". Maker's Mark Distillery was our 1st KBT stop and they have set a high bar. They even had a gratis car charger which was a pleasant surprise after a long drive into the country.Visited October 2023Travelled with familyWritten 16 October 2023
- Jon RAlpharetta, Georgia1 contributionTour, tasting and dipping a bottleOur guide made our Marker's Mark experience the best ever! Jeremy (not sure I can use his full name) personalized our experience, provided us with tons of Marker's Mark and local facts. He truly made our experience memorable. He was even my guide for my dipping experience.Visited October 2023Travelled as a coupleWritten 16 October 2023
- TpreinertLouisville, Kentucky34 contributionsPicking up presentsVisited the gift shop and then the restaurant. This is the first time I have ate at the restaurant here. In the past when I have visited you could only get sandwiches and drinks. I had the meatloaf dish and it was magnificent. Of course the old fashion was perfect too. Gage waited on me and is a very good waiter.Visited October 2023Travelled soloWritten 16 October 2023
- Andrea LKentucky70 contributionsIt’s always a great experience at MakersIt’s always a great experience at Makers. This trip was my favorite to date. Our tour guide Jim was very knowledgeable and took the time to answer any question from the group. We were able to see production live and learn a little about that process. We were also to purchase a bottle from the gift shop to dip in the signature red wax. I would recommend a visit to anyone interested in bourbon, Kentucky history or just a cool and fun experience.Visited October 2023Travelled as a coupleWritten 17 October 2023

Funny and informative the whole time. Taught us the right way to taste bourbon. Beutiful grounds and shop. We chose to put the wax seal on our own bottle of bourbon! Very fun.Visited October 2023Travelled with friendsWritten 18 October 2023
- Venture38553006431Purcellville, Virginia2 contributionsHistoric distillery tour flows over with a mashbill of flavorsMakers Mark moved to the top of my list on distilleries to tour. Beautiful grounds, very organized tour with the history of the land, the owners, the bourbons, and the distillery buildings. Did I mention they make a fabulous bourbon! From the deep inhale of the mash working away, to filling the barrels and letting nature take over for years in a rick house, one can only wait for the next barrel to empty out those precious drops of tasty bourbon that is called Makers Mark ! Ann was our guide and was a delight with very informative knowledge of the distillery processes from start to finish. They have two presses that stamp out their labels & it's done on site. Bottling and hand dipping the bottle tops.... The tasting rooms were spot on and getting to taste several expressions that are only available at the distillery was a plus. I had lunch at the onsite restaurant with a Wagyu beef burger, of which they raise the cattle on their farms. It was very good! It was a perfect fall day and I enjoyed the walk around the area on brick paths and the landscaping was very pretty and tidy. The trees were starting to change into their fall colors which only added to the experience. At the visitor center, that sets up on the hill overlooking the distillery and grounds, there is a back patio with nice big rocking chairs to enjoy a cocktail from the bar and look out over the distillery grounds. A tranquil moment I admit. I will be back to take a more in depth tour on my next visit. Be sure to book your tour ahead of the time you will be visiting as they fill up quickly. I toured on Oct. 18, 2023, but I will be BACK :)Visited October 2023Travelled soloWritten 19 October 2023
- Christian GBaltimore, Maryland79 contributionsKentucky CountrysideLove this distillery! The tours on the bourbon trail can feel redundant but then you come ti Makers Mark and it feels different. Beautiful grounds. Good energy. Lovely staff and sights! Dipping my own bottle was quite the experience! It's out of the way but worth the trip through Kentucky countryside! a MUST see!Visited October 2023Travelled as a coupleWritten 19 October 2023

Maker's Mark is the overrated Disneyland of the bourbon trail: crowded, impersonal, overpriced, and extremely commercialized. You have to fight for a parking spot with loads of tour buses and limos. You can't get a tasting without going on the tour, so if you just want to try their bourbon, you have to go to their restaurant and pay $17 for a flight of 4 1-oz tastes. The restaurant food was pretty good but overpriced, and the host didn't want to be bothered when I had to go ask for forks and napkins. The bourbon was nothing special. This is the only distillery I visited where I had absolutely no interest in buying anything to take home. This place is busy enough, they clearly don't need my business.

I'll start by saying the grounds here are beautiful - they put a lot of time in that. Unfortunately, our clan (family reunion) was too large to do a tour or tasting so we just went to sample and visit the gift shop. Dipping your own bottle was cool - we loved that but the tasting flights at their little bar area (restaurant not open yet) were too expensive compared to the other places we went that day. Maker's is very well know so I guess I expected something different. We were somewhat disappointed.

We were visiting Bardstwon nearby this weekend and although we could not get a tour reservation at MM in advance because they were all booked. We decided to take our chances and arrived when they opened Saturday morning at 9:30 am. Sure glad we did. They just happened to be able to accommodate us.
We were assigned to their best tour guide (IOP), Josi, and began our stroll with her through their only terrific Maker's Mark historic distilling facility located down in Loretto, KY about 15 miles from Bardstown on a beautiful piece of KY countryside.
This is an excellent Bourbon company, making excellent Bourbon, using classic old recipes and methods in an excellent distillery location with excellent people. Iook forward to becoming a full blown Ambassador in a few years and restocking my liquor cabinet with MM from my own barrel that they are putting love into for us. The best of the best IMO.

I signed up to be a Makers Mark Ambassador 5 years ago and the barrel with my name on it just came of age. So we made arrangements to tour as well as pick up a few bottles with my name on them and dip in wax. The tours are great with lots of history and very knowledgeable tour hosts. Since it was a Saturday production wasn't running but you get to see pretty much start to finish minus the bottling on the weekend.

Makers Mark was the distillery everyone in our group wanted to visit. The grounds are beautiful and extensive, with several race horse artwork located around. Madison, our guide, was a master at keeping our group together and providing us with her extensive knowledge of Bourbon distilling and history and processes at Makers Mark. The distillery is large and expensive, so there is some walking, and the buildings are very large, so you can easily see all aspects of the distilling process. The tour ends with bourbon tasting. After, you enter the gift shop where you have an opportunity to buy a bottle and deal it with the iconic hot wax!! Great tour on the Bourbon Trail!!

This distillery has done a marvelous job of disguising itself as a European village instead of an industrial facility that makes great bourbon. Great tour guide, and although we could not go inside many of the buildings due to covid, the ones we saw were terrific. Probably the most laid back tours of the four distilleries we visited in August 2020.

This is a must for a bourbon trail tour. Get tickets on line - cannot stress that enough and get early as well or you may be shut out. Our host Sam was very knowledgeable and enthusiastic. We saw everythinG, from still to printing labels, to bottling, to dipping in red wax, to ric house. Tasting was great as well. A must see.

BUT nowhere are you told until you are in the middle of the tour that the actual distillery is not open during August. You get to see pictures but it is not nearly the same and that should be made clear before you book a tour as w/o seeing the actual distillation process you miss most of the understanding of how bourbon is made--not to mention it is a bit unfair to pay full price for a tour and not see most of what you came to see! To add to it the bottling facilities are closed to the public b/c of pandemic issues (understandable) but that was not mentioned until you would have seen that part of the operation and, again, you are paying full price for only a fraction of the tour.
Essentially you are paying to walk around the grounds, have the process explained to you, see the "bourbon cave" and a pretty empty rickhouse, get a tasting of four products, and an opportunity to visit the gift shop. Having been on the tour several times previously I know what we missed on this visit and it was disappointing (understandable in the case of the bottling facilities but it still should have been mentioned when making reservations).
Again the facilities are beautiful and the docents do a very good job of explaining what happens and why Maker's Mark is different but I feel a bit cheated that we received only a partial tour for full price.

We made reservations for our tour a few months before our visit. This was a very cool tour! The property is beautiful. Our tour guide was very knowledgeable and friendly. She provided us with a lot of great information about the history of the distillery and the distilling property. She was able to answer any of our questions. We were able to sample 4 different Maker's Mark whiskeys. Very cool art pieces around the property as well. The highlight was the Chihuly glass pieces in the ceiling at the end of the tour. There is a restaurant located on the property and a gift shop. We were able to dip our own Maker's Mark bottles to take home with us as well.

Ambassador Tour - our guide, Laura, was wonderful. She made the tour educational and very entertaining. The restaurant was open, but I recommend checking the menu first as the list of offerings is small and a bit unusual. There may not be something that everyone will eat.

Are there a lot of steps and/or steep hills for people who some limited mobility issues?

Hi! Do you have to take a tour of Maker's Mark or can you just visit and walk about and buy a bourbon?
Written 31 August 2024
You can just walk around the grounds and visit the gift shop. You won't be able to get into most of the buildings and some areas of the grounds are marked as off limits.
The grind are beautiful. Make sure to walk through they garden. They use the produce there in the star hill restaurant.

You can purchase drinks at the bar, but it is not the same as the tasting. The guide will provide information about the samples and answer any questions. It is well worth the time to take the tour!

Does the distillery close for bad (winter) weather?
Written 24 January 2021
Probably. Lots of outdoors (and that makes the place an amazing site). Better check directly with them though!

Does anyone know if you need to make a reservation for the limited access tours now?
Written 15 September 2020
We were walk ins and got the first available tour which was just minutes after arriving.Would, however, in the age of COVID suggest calling or booking on line. We last visited in March before the travel world shutdown.
Written 16 September 2020
The website says the distillery is closed though I see reviews from people who have taken tours. What is open at Maker's Mark? Can you visit the gift shop? Do they sell their bourbon there? Thank you
Written 25 August 2020
The gift shop, restaurant and tours are all open. The distillery tour is limited access to inside locations.
Dipping of bottles is still permitted. Wearing a mask is mandatory at all times.
Written 26 August 2020
Agree with other comments. Call them and ask. There are lots of areas to walk. But if you take the tour that goes through the distillery and there is a very nice gift shop. Great place to visit.
I am sure if you call, you can get specifics.
Written 20 August 2020
If i purchase bottles at several different distilleries on my trip, how do I ship those bottles home?
Written 23 June 2020
Some distilleries will ship for you. If flying, there is luggage designed to safely hold alcohol bottles that can be checked baggage. You can also ship it to yourself.
Written 23 June 2020
Is it necessary to book your tour ahead of time.?
Written 5 March 2020
We did not book ahead of time and only waited about 20 minutes before our tour started. A lot depends on the time of year etc. We were there in late October - which I would recommend- the landscape and the trees turning color were spectacular!
