About
This art deco masterpiece has been the site of a bombing, an assassination and the infinite machinations of state kingpins and politicos.

Unique capital
Oct 2021
Awesome building and we only walked around the grounds. Nice that its not the traditional capital look. Some awesome history here too. Check it out!

Not easy to get into.
Jun 2021
First, let's be fair. The building architecture is great. The grounds are beautiful.
But...
It isn't the easiest place to access. My wife needs handicapped parking. She can't walk too far, and as far as steps go, it depends upon how many and how steep.
We parked in a handicapped spot to the east of the building, on a Saturday morning. Still had to walk about a quarter block it seemed to get to the handicapped entrance. When we got up there, there was a sign stating that the entrance that was open was on the west side of the building! So, we opted to pass on seeing inside. Find a spot close enough to the entrance and then hope that it really was open? No thank you. And as far as heading through the main entrance (if it's open,) there are quite a number of steps leading up to it. I've seen inaccessibility problems with other great buildings. Do architects even think about practical usage of the building?
Anyway, I took some photos. It is an impressive building. Worth a stop to at least see it and the grounds. The grounds are filled with large live oaks and other nice shade trees.

Observation Deck is a must
Aug 2021 • Friends
Love taking friend who are visiting from out of town here. Going to the observation deck at the top is a must. Gives a great view of Baton Rouge from a birds eye view! Just be sure to call and confirm if the observation deck is open prior to going. Sometimes it closes for weather, covid, or other random reasons

Prepare to walk
Jun 2021
You can’t park up close like the old days so be prepared to walk. Choose a cool time of day since the Capitol is in the full sun. the parks and roads around the building are very beautiful and worth the time to stop.

American Queen Steamboat Company excursion

During our day in Baton Rouge was learned about Huey Long and how he tore down the old capital using 85 prisoners overnight and then drained the swamp and filled in the land to build the new capital. It is the tallest State Capital in the US. It is a beautiful building reminiscent of the Empire State Building.

Tallest state capitol building in the country
Jul 2020
When they say this is the tallest state capitol building in the country, they aren't kidding. It looks like a skyscraper, very unique. Sadly we arrived in the evening and during Covid, so the building was closed. I want to come back when it's open and enjoy the views from the top. Park and area around the capitol looked well maintained and safe. However, possibly due to the pandemic the streets were deserted.

A Sterling Introduction to Louisiana's Legacy
Sep 2020
I had a complete, and satisfying, tour of the Capitol Park and up close view of the intricate designs and carvings on the exterior o fthis magnificent structure. The presentation of the key figures in Louisiana history-from early European exploration to Twentieth Century leaders, the friezes of lawgivers, the iconic pelican carvings, everywhere, The grounds feature a statue of Huey P. Long, a bust of George Washington, the well-preserved Powder Magazine and Armory, the Pentagon Barracks, Indian Mound, several well-tended flower gardens and iconic trees-and a Capitol Museum,(which I did not visit, this time.) Capitol Lake, betwen the Executive Mansion and the Capitol itself, adds to the peaceful ambiance of the district.

Nice place to walk
Sep 2020
Beautiful campus. The grounds offer a number of foot paths to wander around complex. The building can be seen from a lot of different areas of the city, but seeing it up close was really lovely.

Interesting History and Excellent Views
Feb 2020 • Couples
The exterior of this building is imposing, opening up to an ornate entranceway flanked on either side by the house and senate chambers, which are impressive and elaborate. There are several statues and busts of historical figures throughout the entrance with plaques explaining their significance to the history of the state. These are interesting and worth the time to browse.

The views from the 27 floor observation deck, on a clear day is impressive and worth the visit.
