Exceptional architecture

Lovely old building. Breath-taking rotunda. Knowledgeable staff who are eager to share their knowledge. Interesting history displays in some of the rooms.
Handicap accessible. Handicap parking is available in the back of the building and they have an elevator. More handicapped spots are across the street on North Street, and some a block away to the north of that. We were there on a Saturday and it was not crowded.

One of the best historic tours we have taken and free. Our tour guide had many funny stories about Governor Long and really made history come alive.

A great historic building !
Aug 2021
We visited the Old State Capitol last week while on vacation in Louisiana. We had a great tour guide named Mike who was very knowledgeable about Huey Long and the colorful characters who made up Louisiana politics. Also, the building was very beautiful with a magnificent stained glassed dome. Well worth a visit !

Makes you feel like you are in an old castle. If i could only do one thing downtown, this is the place I would visit.

Fabulous Castle
Apr 2021
This was the first time I had visited the museum in several years. It was even more spectacular than I remembered. You take a self guided tour of two floors of the "castle". The stain glass dome and windows are stunning. At some point during our tour a guide found us and said the movie "Ghost of the Castle" was ready to start. This is a new attraction since my last visit. What a great way to tell the story of this wonderful historic place. They call it a 4-D experience, with flickering chandeliers and ghostly figures! Before you leave you should walk across the street, climb up the levee and get a great view of the Mississippi River.

Beautiful building; friendly guides
Apr 2021 • Couples
We walked in on a whim, and enjoyed a short time walking around the old state capitol. Upon entry we were greeted by a guide who gave us an quick overview, and then gave us a sheet enabling us to do a self guided tour. We could have spent longer than the 20 minutes we did, but we wanted to walk around the city a bit more. It is a beautiful building inside and out, with some very interesting history, and well worth stopping by.

Free and interesting

We spent 2 hours exploring this historic former Capitol building. They offer a self guided tour fact sheet and had displays throughout the building to learn more. We enjoyed the mystery of the missing George statue and the room explaining why Huey Long was such a divisive politician.

Don’t forget to stop in the gift shop on your way out.

Tip: there is street parking nearby at the water front park; if someone in your party needs handicap access there is limited handicap parking in the rear of the building.

The architecture is stunning

The architecture both inside and out are the best part of the building. It’s free to enter so go inside and see the dome and the other parts of the building. They have some exhibits on politics inside that are cool to check out.

Very Interesting Historical Landmark

Free, self guided tour of the old Capitol Building. Beautiful architecture and well preserved considering it was constructed 20 years prior to the civil war.
