Fascinating history!
Oct 2021 • Couples
What makes this a five star experience is the guide, Beth, that spent an hour with us on tour. There is so much history and background that she brought to life making the experience Real. The house and contents are stellar, but you really need a guide or guidebook to appreciate the history of each item. Lovely time!

A Well-Preserved Sugar Cane Plantation
Sep 2020
While I abhor the practice of enslavement, it is important to know about both the day-to-day lives of enslaved and slavers, alike. Magnolia Mound shows the intricate details of the lives lived by all inhabitants of a sugar cane plantation, in the Bayou Country of southern Louisiana. The stories of both the Creole French and the American owners, as well as of the slaves and the overseers, were well-related by the docent on duty. One is free to walk the grounds of most of the property, with the Historic House only accessible with a docent present. Photography is allowed in all areas, except the interior of the Historic House.

Very good

I really enjoy visiting the plantation houses and grounds. This plantation was very good being a well maintained house with some great period items. I haven’t seen a plantation tour with a more complete kitchen with some cooking items that I have never seen before. Beth the tour guide is a gem both in personality and knowledge. She really enhanced the tour with her knowledge.

Great tour guide and interesting facts
Dec 2019
Definitely go through with the tour guide. She had a lot of info about the Louisiana area, the plantation and so much more. There were only 2 of us that went through with the guide so we were able to ask questions and see everything we wanted. Lots of interesting facts about how the plantation was run and how people lived at that time in history.

Very interesting walk through history

Large area, many buildings, good descriptions, learned a great deal about sugar cane plantations and the painfully hard life. It is a tribute to the mission and vision of BREC to serve the people of Baton Rouge and visitors like us.

Interesting and quick

I visited this plantation and did the self guided tour. I think the guided tour would have been worth it and I would have learned a lot more. There is an entry fee but only a few bucks. I have never visited a plantation before so it was interesting to me to understand the dynamics of the time. There are still a few structures that still stand from that time including 200 year old trees! Some buildings were renovated in the early 1900s and 1940s. But still really neat. There is walking involved but the buildings are not as far apart as they actually would have been so it’s really not bad. It didn’t take long at all doing the self guided tour.

All Alone
Nov 2019
By choosing the self guided tour I was able to view the plantation all by myself. The solitude allowed me to reflect upon what life would have been like during its working years. If I had more time I then would have wanted a tour of the house itself. I was told to feel free to look in all the windows but it was not quite enough. Depending on your knowledge of the time period make your decision. Having taught Social Studies I was fine on my own.

Well maintained, very historical plantation. Tour was excellent with a great tour guide. She gave lots of historical and detailed information. We were also allowed to visit the grounds around the plantation. Beautiful area and setting. Huge old trees all over.

Great historical place that many just pass right by

Informative tour, lovely house. Mrs. Mays was a terrific tour guide. We could explore the grounds on our own. Especially nice during our visit as we were the only two and could imagine in our minds what the place was like, long ago. Gift shop has lots to browse through.

Disappointed

Very disappointed. Went there during posted hours but it was closed. Not sure why. Maybe because of football game?
