About
The USS KIDD Veterans Museum is a nonprofit organization, highlighting the role that Louisiana and its citizens have played in U.S. military history. The shoreside museum offers a permanent collection of Louisiana veterans’ artifacts, traveling exhibits, visiting ships, and event space with views of the Mississippi River. For nearly 40 years, the Museum and the USS KIDD, a National Historic Landmark and the Museum’s largest artifact, have served as a reminder to the people of Louisiana of the service and sacrifices of our state’s veterans. Both are visited by thousands of people from around the world each year.

Neat experience
Sep 2021 • Friends
Waking around the ship is pretty neat, as well as informative. So while the passageways aren’t the most spacious, I found this added to the experience and allowed me to become really immersed in the whole experience. Moving around the tight quarters is part of what makes this well worth the price of admission. Otherwise, there is still plenty to observe and learn. Would recommended for people of any age.

Walk back in time
Jul 2021
We had a fantastic experience at the USS Kidd. We were traveling with family that included 3 young children under the age of 10 who absolutely loved it. The kids loved nipping in and out of the various areas of the ship. They certainly could play pretend all over the ship. We loved how there is plenty of history to the ship with very informative write ups in some of the areas. If you are a military history or WWII buff, then I highly recommend visiting.

We visit the area and stopped by river front, the USS Kidd and the veteran, Coast Guard memorial park. It is a very nice place to stroll if the weather is not that hot.

A touchstone of American history
Jun 2021
This is a true gem of the 175 of these built only 3 remain and this is the most complete. It was used in Greyhound.... the Tom hanks movie because of that... The fletcier class destroyer is even today regarded as the finest fighting ship over all ever built. Ships like the Kidd are what helped us win the war... Fighting in Europe, the Pacific, Korea, even vietnam.... That's quite a history!!!

To be able to touch such a piece of american spirit and history is an experience not equaled.. this is a touchstone of the best of American history. and pride.
..
If your a Destroyer vet the staff will go over the top to show you around your old home If your a visitor this is an outstanding experience to see in detail what our fighting Navy did and how its crews lived..........
There is a great museum too that lets you dig deeper and take away an emotional experience that may humble you...... This is a must plan to spend 3-4 hours there is so much to see and so much detail .... GO

Wonderful piece of history!

This is my 3rd ship to tour and while its not the largest it is well organized. On board the ship you follow directional signage throughout on a self guided tour. Some areas were closed for restoration so we were detoured to the next stop on the tour but we were able to see most of the ship. It is not wheelchair accessible as there are a lot of stairs on the tour but there may be a modified tour for those who need it....not sure. Along with the ship there is a museum with 2 floors and a gift shop. We learned a lot on our tour and would love to come back after all the restorations are complete. Be advised it is very hot and humid in Baton Rouge especially in the summer months so make sure to bring water as you will be sweating by the time your tour is over. It is worth the sweat though.....

A piece of history. Everyone should remember “FREEDOM ID NOT FREE’

I love wartime history from airplanes to battleships and take my to boys to everyone we pass if there is time. It is important to teach our young generation that our fathers and grandfather’s generations died to give us our freedoms that today’s generations trash and destroy the liberties and values they died for.

Nice but small
Jul 2021
If you drive anything larger than a standard vehicle you are going to have to park in a paid lot about a 5-10 minute walk away in order to visit as they only offer a small amount of on street parking close to the battleship. Super cheap compared to others but also much smaller. However, for first time visitors, you can explore a large majority of this ship, but it is extremely similar to others if you have visited other ships before. Worth the stop and the museum inside is pretty nice. It is full of uniforms and memorabilia from different eras and even has a replica bunker to walk through. They have several small ship models of other ships as well which is pretty nice to look at as they include extreme detail. Of course there is a gift shop with expensive items but worth the stop and travel through history. Many, many steps both up and down. In total you will explore the main deck and two decks below and two decks above.

Great WW II stories
Jun 2021
The Kidd was hit in the forward boiler room by a Japanese Kamikaze resulting in a boiler explosion that killed every one in the compartment
The Kidd was known as the “Pirate of the Pacific, and so has a pirate flag side flying and a buccaneer painted on one of her stacks.
Prior to going on board, we toured a great museum with all sorts of naval history m/ ship models and the story of the Kidd. Looks like lots of WWII and destroyer sailors in general have reunions at this museum.
We spent a good 2 hours between the Museum and touring the ship. We have been on many a WWII museum ship and he felt real comfortable visiting the 376 ft. long ship that was home to a crew of 330 during WWII.

Great place
May 2021 • Family
We made it right as they closed so we couldn’t go inside, but the place is great outside and exploring the grounds. My kids can’t wait to go back when they are open so we can actually go inside and explore.

We love anything to do with the military. The USS Kidd Destroyer did not disappoint. It took about 1-2 hours on a self guided tour. Highly recommend!
