About
Son Doong Cave is in the heart of the Phong Nha Ke Bang National Park in Quang Binh province. This incredible cave was only explored in 2009/2010 by the British Cave Research Association. Situated in the deep jungle, the entrance to the cave was found by a local jungle man Mr Ho Khanh. Son Doong Cave is now the largest cave in the world and has understandably been the attention of many film companies such as the BBC, National Geographic, Japanese and Brazilian teams. It also featured in National Geographic Magazine in 2011. Son Doong cave is unlike any other caves on the planet. Inside this giant cave are two huge daylight windows which allows the light to enter many parts of the cave. At the base of these windows are large jungles which use the available light and so trees up to 30m tall are present. But Son Doong is not only about its immense size, the cave has amazing examples of some of the best speleothems in the world. Giant stalagmites up to 80m high and enormous rimstone pools are present throughout the cave. There are also excellent examples of giant cave pearls and a newly discovered side passage is full of large fossils over 300 million years old. As well as rare species of plants in the cave a number of new species of animals have recently been discovered. Monkeys, hornbills and flying foxes have all been seen in the jungle section of the caves.

The most intense adventure of my lifetime
Mar 2020 • Couples
Everything we expected and more. The caves and jungle are out of this world. Every minute was an experience to remember, each day was unique and delightful on its own. This was a tour full of different challenges and beauty, I was able to take in and enjoy the four days my own way and my husband his own way. The feeling of safety was not a question, there are expert tour guides in front and at the back of you at all times. The guides were the best at what they are there for( your safety). They were extremely caring and professional. We felt honored to have Dr. Howard Limbert and Heiu on the tour. Don’t think there’s anything out there that will top this once in a life time experience, thank you Oxalis adventure.

JUST DO IT!!!
Feb 2020 • Friends
There are no words for the awe and majesty of son doong. I came in with high expectations and the entire experience set the bar even higher. Having “the” Howard as our tour guide already had me geeking out from sheer fandom alone. Then add on top of that the ABSOLUTELY AMAZING team of the local support staff lead by Canh. Your safely is their utmost priority but they were all so warm and kind and funny that by the end of the 4 days, it felt like saying goodbye to my new family. If you have room in your backpack, bring soccer balls, kites, and any other kid friendly items to give to the villagers who live in the national park. Oxalis has done a brilliant job of supporting the entire region through their philosophy of giving a hand up so that the locals can have more opportunities for their own betterment. Although the cost is very daunting, if you can swing it, DO IT!!!! It is truly a once in a lifetime experience.

Wonderful tour

Our tour guide, Canh, was phenomenal. We spent 4 days with him and the porters. Canh was playful, happy and helped you get integrated and see the Vietnamese culture (if you were interested).
The cave was interesting and each day was different even though you were in the same cave. Howard was very mindful and allowed for great opportunities to take photos.

Best hike by far!
Feb 2020 • Friends
I have hiked many places in the world but this by far was the best hike I have ever done. The staff and crew were amazing. They were there for us every step of the way. I always felt safe. The food was delicious! We ate 3 meals a day and there was plenty of food for everyone. Canh our tour guide was very knowledgeable and funny. He had us laughing the entire hike. I would recommend this trip to anyone who doesn’t mind hiking thru the jungle and getting dirty.

Once in a lifetime experience...worth it!
Jul 2019 • Solo
Oxalis is the only tour operator permitted to take tourists on this epic tour through the largest cave in the world! Son Doong is located in Phong Nha National Park, and there are probably still several undiscovered caves in this area.

The trip was 4D/3N; I actually booked this trip one day prior to its start due to a glitch in their booking system. Although the trip is expensive, it truly is an experience of a lifetime.

As for the hiking and camping...I didn’t find it strenuous. Camping is more like glamping since porters carry your stuff, chefs cook your food and there are already tents set up. For the hiking, get shoes with good grip as there can be some tricky spots (traversing sharp rocks or muddy trails). I wore cheap rubber shoes and wool hiking socks and this worked well for me! The rubber shoes had great grip. Beware that there are leeches on the trail so you will want to make sure all your clothes are tucked in and wear long-sleeves and long pants.

The tour operator also provides a checklist of things to bring and I found that to be very accurate list of things you will need.

I had a blast and highly recommend!

Exploring Son Doong!
Dec 2018
To enter the magnificent cave called Son Doong, spending any appreciable time within its boundless caverns and self-contained, self-supporting aquatic eco-systems, is to experience something so dramatic and beyond-the-realm of the imaginable.

My heart was left in Son Doong
Sep 2019 • Couples
If you are reading this and you plan to visit Son Doong soon, please please help me find my heart. I left it in the cave and it must be still pounding with excitement from natural challenges and joy from the camaraderie that we had in those 4 days.
A few moments of hesitance flashed through our mind when we chose Son Doong for our honeymoon, but it came out to be wayyyy beyond our expectations. The service provided by Oxalis team is spectacular and surpasses most of the top-notch service from 5-star hotels around the world. They are a team of heart-warming people who guided us, made sure that we were absolutely safe, ported our luggages, tents, pillows, food, water, and prepared our delicious meals. They preserve the cave with their life, put all efforts in conserving and not disturbing the natural settings that have been in place for 400 millions years. I'm proud of them for keeping and presenting this global treasure to the world. I want to send my gratitude to Hung, the knowledgable and hilarious tour guide who gave us aqdequate information about how the cave was formed, who took our orders for breakfast before we go to bed, who created a gameshow in the cave which kept us thoroughly entertained at nights; to An and Linh, my two favorite safety assistants, who helped me through all terrains, pushed me and pulled me and saved my life so many times :). They were all so caring, gentle and they were incredible photographers. Actually my heart was left with them!
Regarding natural scenes, you won't see these types of formation anywhere in the world. Limestone, yes, but dolines with jungles - I don't think so. The views here are mesmerizing. If you are a traveler, you can't miss this. I don't need to say much about this, you just need to feel it yourself, pictures are only a tiny fraction of its beauty, come see it asap.
I'm in awe of this experience, thank you team Oxalis for making it so memorable. Oxalis team will occupy my heart forever.
