We stopped here as we traveled south. I have to say I learned a few things I never knew about the civil war. The grounds are very clean and kept. The little lake was very pretty.

This Confederate Bastion of Mississippi River defense is often overlooked by CW historians. Although the remaining earthworks and battle sites are not as extensive as those at Vicksburg, the defense of Port Hudson was no less important to the South. It was under siege longer...More

I've stopped by the Port Hudson sites a couple of times in the last year. This last time I went early (open at 10am) and hiked most of the trails. They have 8 miles of nicely groomed trails with historic markers along the way describing...More

My sister and I have been doing some hiking in Louisiana. This is a great hike and the terrain isn't totally flat. Some challenges along the way, but not hard. The map provided is a bit misleading. The 6 miles are routes that dead end...More

We need to go back and do this again properly. I don't know enough of the history to feel as though I can fully appreciate but will do next time.

You can absorb the fascinating exhibits in the visitors center then hike to various spots to see additional panels and exhibits, including the cliff over what used to be the Mississippi River where battle action took place. It has many trails for hikes so taking...More

Interesting tour and museum. Surrendered 3 days after Vicksburg fell as there was no point in defending one spot on the river. Their stand and surrender saved the plantation homes and towns in the area from plunder. There is a Union Naval officer was buried...More
