If you're on Monhegan for more than 2 days, spend an entire afternoon here. It has a wonderful collection of island lore - fascinating! Next year, I might volunteer there one day.

This is a tiny museum, and a very personal one for the islanders blending their maritime history with their heritage as an artist's destination. I loved the breadth of the exhibits, the simplicity of daily life portrayed, and the harshness of living on an island year round, especially one without electricity until relatively recently. We spent well over an hour... More

If you're a history junky, this is a must. Within the walls of the museum, you'll learn about the settlers and how the island really hasn't changed over the years. Very interesting!

With no real appreciation of art in my past I really loved the history and art exhibited. The docents were well informed and passionate about the island and its stories. I certainly did not know of the islands long history and developement. The art exhibit was extensive and I felt I got to know the late artist. The many painters... More

This meandering museum in the former cottage of the lighthouse operator is full of charm and history with exhibits about fishing, transportation to and from the island, daily life, education, and more. Also, don't miss the small art gallery just across from it with a different exhibit each summer. On some days you can take a 15-minute tour up into... More

Thank you for the kind review. I hope you can come back again. We update not only the annual exhibit but also the art that is shown in the history museum changes every year too. Well worth a visit every year. :) More

There is something charmingly "down home" about this museum, with its motley collections of natural specimens, artifacts, and Monhegan memorabilia, but I found it really delightful -- a good way to get the history and the feeling of this remarkable island. And there is a goodly amount of excellent art as well.

Very interesting museum for such a remote site. Great info on the history of the island and its inhabitants. Definitely worth visiting.

Perhaps one of the smallest museums anywhere, but, with drop dead beauty all around. We were there for the Lamar Dodd exhibition. Dodd, a noted Georgia artist spent 40 or more summers on Monhegan, yet this is the first time there has been a showing of his work there. All quite good, great layout. If there, it's certainly worth a... More

Expected a few displays but was awed by room after room (after room) of the wonderful history of this lovely island. Worth every cent of the $5 admission.even if you only have a short time to visit. Will return on subsequent visits, Don't know who's responsible for creating, maintaining and growing the museum but bravo and hats off to them!
