This is a terrific place to set the kids loose for a fun and educational outing. We visited with our 5- and 8-year-old grands. They explored the top 3 floors. Their favorite spots were the fire truck/station and the 3rd floor color-light-camera obscura exhibit. But,...More

We were able to use our Boston Children's Museum membership for a discount on admission while visiting Portland. It was a hot summer day but was still very crowded. There's no air conditioning so it felt hot and stuffy.. however, my kids did not notice...More

From the long line to enter to the overcrowded interior, it was difficult to enjoy the displays. The loadspeaker announced things happening, but it was not clear when and where. While there were things for small children to do, there were just too many children...More

We took our 21 month old, and he had a good time. The museum has several different areas for kids to play and learn. My son enjoyed the toddler play area and the ball area the most. He also enjoyed the little car, fire truck,...More

We visited the museum on a cold, rainy spring day and were pleasantly surprised. The museum had just the right amount of interactive exhibits and playspace for our 5 and 3 y/o kids to spend 2 hours playing and learning. The staff is wonderfull and...More

The range of interactive items is not larg and are suitable only for the younger child say 3 to 6. A special presentation by Portland 's educational organisation on "walls and art " kept my rating at average.

We spent two afternoons here during a one week visit to Portland. They have two floors with several themed rooms and all interactive. During the day there is a schedule of organized activities that you can choose to join. My 6 yo loved it and...More

There would be some things that would be interesting for an 8.5 yo, but the way the museum is set up, it definitely looks younger - things are small/low and most of it seems to be geared to ages 3-6. Each child is different... More

Two hours would be perfectly adequate. The star show and touch tank are really nice programs for the kids. So, you may be there a little longer to get both of those in.
