Celebrating Maine's Role in American Art, the Farnsworth Art Museum offers...

Celebrating Maine's Role in American Art, the Farnsworth Art Museum offers a nationally recognized collection of works from many of America's greatest artists. With 20,000 square feet of gallery space and over 15,000 works in the collection, there is always something new on view at the Farnsworth. The museum has one of the largest collections of works by sculptor Louise Nevelson. Its Wyeth Center features works of Andrew, N.C. and Jamie Wyeth. The Farnsworth's library is also housed in its Rockland, ME, campus. Two historic buildings, the Farnsworth Homestead and the Olson House, and Julia's Gallery for Young Artists complete the museum complex.

Three generations of Wyeths are represented here, making the Farnsworth a stop on anybody's New England art trail, and a good cross- section of their contemporaries are represented here, too. Check the website for temporary exhibitions. Good gift shop. Attractive town with places for lunch. We had lobster rolls al fresco, just down the street.

We just stopped in at the gift gift shop at the Farnsworth Art Museum, and for me this was the best shopping on the main street in Rockland. Many unique items that could not be found elsewhere and basic items, unique writing instruments made in Italy for example, & beautiful jewelry. A great place to find special gifts for kids... More

When I went on a field trip, I saw the most beautiful art masterpieces ever. Hope you can come see them soon before they close.

A visit to Rockland is not complete without a visit to the Farnsworth Art Museum. The $15 entry fee is good for two buildings. The main building houses an Andrew Wyeth collection among other impressive works. The other church building houses NC Wyeth paintings (my favorite).

Superb regional art museum. Heavy emphasis on Maine and New England artists. Get your Wyeth on here, but also greats such as Fitz Henry Lane (Camden Mountains from the South Entrance to the Harbor), Thomas Fansioli (South End Boston), Robert Indiana (iconic Love letters sculpture), and numerous Louise Nevelson sculptures. Four of the 12-13 galleries are devoted to contemporary art.... More

The Farnsworth is a beautiful repository for art by all of the Wyeths. There are also multiple galleries that, during our recent visit, were dedicated to a contemporary print show that was truly stunning. Allow an hour or a bit more.

We came for the show of Abstract Expressionist collaborations with Donald Saff. We were not disappointed. A rare view of the importance of collaboration in the works of Rosenquist, Rauschenberg, Graves, Lichtenstein. Great variety of work and excellent curation. Wow, Rockland, just wow!

All things Wyeth, a wonderful look at New England art at its best. Helpful staff. Good history of one of America's premiere art families. We drove from Kennebunkport, with a stop at Bowdouin College to see their fine art museum. Made a nice mini-art-trail especially with plans to stop in at Ogunquit to see Jamie Wyeth's work on display at... More

We were driving from Bar Harbor to Portland when we saw this Museum. We stopped just for a break and wow were we pleased we did. It contained mostly works by Andrew Wyeth and a traveling exhibit. We worth the entry.

Excellent museum. Worked out perfectly for us as it was a rainy day on our two day stopover here en route to Portland. Really enjoyed the art work and the Wyeth family exhibition. I feel I learned more about life in Maine by the seashore (the fishermen, lobstermen, etc.).

We're so glad you were able to make it to our exhibitions. I happen to be a particular fan of the current N.C. Wyeth seascapes on view, as well as the more intimate "Andrew Wyeth: The Dory" show, which examines that key mode of transportation in our state's history and culture. Thanks again for the kind words, and I hope... More
