While staying in southwest harbor, we went to the Wendell Gilley Museum. The collection of bird carvings is amazing. It chronicles the carving life of Wendell Gilley. As part of the museum there is an artists studio in which carving takes place. The three men who happened to be in residence when we visited were quite happy to share their... More

Wendell Gilley was an artist who captured the beauty of the birds he saw everyday on Mount Desert Island. His work is inspiring and beautiful. The museum and carving workshop is displayed very well. Other local bird artist works are also on display. Well worth the stop.

Very nice if you really like birds. Carvings, demonstration area, prints and paintings. Small fee to enter and a few sculptures and panels outside as well.

We took a break from hiking the lovely trails in Acadia and decided to go to the Wendell Gilley Museum. Yes we knew it was a bird carving museum but honestly we did not know what exactly to except. It was AMAZING!!! The collection of Wendell Gilley's body of work from 1930 - 80's is exceptional. You will be able... More

Made a quick stop here on our trip around the island. We were immediately awed as we walked in by the large eagle carving. Throughout the museum there were all different types of birds of all sizes. It was very impressive. We also got to meet another carver and got to see him work on a piece.

Thank you for sharing your experience on TripAdvisor. The Bald Eagle carving that awed you gets a lot of "wows;" it was a retirement gift to Nelson Rockefeller, from his brother, David, upon his completion of his term as Vice President of the United States. It was a most appropriate gift, since the Bald Eagle is the central symbol in... More

You can try your hand at carving a wooden bird, and if you feel confident enough, buy a little kit to bring home. Includes sufficient amount of bandages for the inevitable boo boos!

The carvings of birds in this museum's collection are beautiful and very true to life. There were two carvers working when we were there, and they kindly explained their craft and answered our questions. The museum is easy to find and well worth the visit.

We went because we had read about a special exhibition in a magazine. We had not heard of the artist, Ashley Bryan, but he is wonderfully versatile. He has created puppets, stained glass works and paintings, among other things. He has written and illustrated books for both children and adults. Well worth seeing. The museum is named for the artist... More

This is a beautiful respite from the busy touristy areas around Acadia National Park. The work of Wendell Gilley and the new work of Steven, the carver in residence, are exquisite. You will be so awed by their talent. We were especially treated by our happening to visit during the special exhibit of Ashley Bryan's artwork! What a gifted artist... More

Quiet, small, treasure of a place. Mr. Gilley's carvings are wonderous. The short film is great. When we went, there was an exhibit of Ashley Bryan's work as well. (If you don't see that here, go to Islesford. Worth the trip, but check first for hours on Little Cranberry). Minimal price for maximum experience.
