This minimalist masterpiece was built by the founder of the Bauhaus...

This minimalist masterpiece was built by the founder of the Bauhaus movement. Walter Gropius, founder of the German design school known as the Bauhaus, was one of the most influential architects of the 20th century. Modest in scale, the 1938 Gropius home was revolutionary in impact. It combined the traditional elements of New England architecture -- wood, brick, and fieldstone -- with innovative materials rarely used in domestic settings at that time -- glass block, acoustical plaster, and chrome banisters, along with the latest technology in fixtures. In keeping with Bauhaus philosophy, every aspect of the house and its surrounding landscape was planned for maximum efficiency and simplicity of design. The house contains an important collection of furniture designed by Marcel Breuer made in the Bauhaus workshops. With all the family possessions still in place, the house has an immediacy rarely found in house museums.

Major piece of European history in an up market town. If you love Modernism, it is a must see!! The house is 2,400 square feet. Before Gropius arrived at Harvard U, he founded Bauhaus in Berlin in 1919. He came to America before the War to become the architecture professor at Harvard University. I would have loved to have been... More

While not typical of a historic house tour, this was a very interesting tour and our tour guide was fantastic. Interesting house, albeit small, and very interesting if you are into the Bauhaus school. Definitely worth a look if you are in the area of Walden woods.

My husband and I truly enjoyed the guided tour of this amazing historical house. It talented builder and owner utilized similar methods seen in Chinese Feng Shui study to create a practical, modern and aesthetically pleasing architecture. Can't believe it was build in the 1930s!

As director of Bauhaus, Walter Gropius's focus was on utility, order, architectural integrity and the decorative arts. You won't believe this house was designed shortly before WWII and its principals of sensible living resonate today. Works of art from other famous artists as well as the integration of nature with human construction are two key issues which stand out. Our... More

One of the main reasons I came back to Boston this year. I had heard about this historic house from a docent. It is exactly as the architect's wife left it. I like modern simple, midcentury energy efficiency but visited with friends who prefer traditional decor. We all enjoyed this tour. Each tour is limited to 10 people and start... More

Just about a thirty minute drive from the Harvard area, this home built in 1936 by a founder of the Bauhaus movement in Germany is maintained beautifully with much of the interior as it appeared during Walter Gropious' lifetime and with mostly original furnishings. If you go in winter months, the home is mostly open only on weekends with tours... More

Enjoyed the guided tour very much. The house and the history behind it was interesting. Learned more about Walter Gropius and his life. The grounds around the estate were beautiful and it was interesting to see other houses of the same design dotted about.
