Our mission is to inspire people to explore the past! The Benzie Area Historical Society seeks to educate and entertain the public about Benzie County and many of communities that boarder it, through exhibits at the museum and programs held throughout the area. The Benzie Area Historical Society and Museum celebrate the people, industries, and organizations that made Benzie County’s History and Heritage an important factor in Northwest Michigan. The BAHS Museum is housed in a 1887 built Congregational Church building in Benzonia and is listed on the Michigan State Register of Historic Sites.

Our museum holds historical treasures beginning with Americas “First People, Native Americans before the arrival of the first white settlers. Industries beginning with the timber rush, logging and sawmills, charcoal and early chemical works, iron foundry’s, maritime history including commercial shipping from various Lake Michigan ports, commercial and recreational fishing, agriculture and food processing and of course, the Ann Arbor Railroad and Car Ferry days.

The Benzie Area Historical Society is a Michigan non-profit and IRS 501(c)(3) tax-exempt membership organization.

Nice History Lesson

Very nice and helpful staff. Learn local history and more. Every small town should have this choice for the kids to learn about where they live.

We really enjoyed this little museum. It was absolutely perfect for our five year old. Small enough to walk through quickly, but lots of fun artifacts that help a child really see the history. And, they had a small kids room upstairs where he could touch and play with stuff. The lady working there was friendly and attentive. They are... More

When traveling we often visit the local history museum. This is probably one of the best that we have ever been too. The exhibits were well done and engaging. Even if you are not from the Benzie area, this is a great place to learn more about Michigan History.

Unlike many museums, this is not a jumbled collection of stuff, but a museum that tells the story of the local area. In addition to the tales of logging camps and ferries across Lake Michigan and summer camps, they have a corner dedicated to local author Bruce Catton, whose memoir Waiting for the Morning Train gives us a sense of... Housed in an old Victorian church in the historical section of Benzonia, this museum houses a variety of objects and photographs of the history of Benzie County. Going there is a step into the past. They also have meetings of the Geneology Society, among other groups.

Well designed exhibits with fun and interesting information about the Benzie area. Programs throughout the year are informative and bring in local experts. Docents are friendly and well versed on the exhibits and very approachable. Everyone should make a stop while they are visiting the area.

This is the nicest local museum I have visited. The artifacts are nicely displayed, well lighted and labeled. There are a lot of items to look at, but they are not crowded together. If you are in the area, this is a great place to take a look at.

We REALLY enjoyed our visit to the Benzi Area Historical Museum. We spent an entire afternoon and must go back to see more. Our guide was knowledgable, helpful and very friendly. There's too much to see and learn in a short period of time. We had a personal guide for the two of us.
