We came here because we love agates. The museum for a dollar is worth it. Lots of cool agates to see. There is a small history section in the very back. Owner knows so much and she's very easy to talk to.

Cute small rock/agate shop and museum. Only $1 to look at the small two room museum that shows history of people & culture of Grand Marais of the past. The rock shop has reasonable prices and the owner is full of interesting stories. Take a few minutes to stop by. Hours 11-5 most days.

You won't find a more knowledgeable person on the subject of agates, rocks, and Grand Marais history than Karen. Definitely stop in, browse, see the museum, and ask questions. You will not be disappointed! Karen is also an artists who takes beautiful agate slices and turns them into just about anything; she will do special orders if there is something... More

Only open in the afternoon, but definitely worth getting to. Browse, ask questions. While we were there, plenty of agate hunters came in. The store owner "wrote the book" on agate hunting....literally. We heard people come in and talk to her about how helpful her book was. The whole think is interesting, if you are a curious person. The museum... More

This is a great little spot which highlights one of the many amazing aspects of Lake Superior, the rock hunting! Our kids loved searching for rocks on our trip and we spent hours scouring the beach for agates and other unique stones. This place has it all, identification of stones you find, examples of other Lake Superior stones and some... More

I think if I were to visit Grand Marais I'd start here. I never knew there were agates in Michigan, especially in the number that there were found near here. The photos and history is very interesting as well. Most fun - for 50 cents or a dollar (or more) you can buy polished agates and stones. What next? Drive... More

This a nice rock and agate shop run by the lady who has written several books on agates and how to hunt for agates around the lakes. The bonus is the history museum in the third room. Pay the lady, hey its only a buck and take the time to look over her exhibits. You might even be able to... More

This is a fun quick stop if you are in the area. It is $1, if you like to see everything. Also many pretty rocks and stones for sale, small and large. Something fun for everybody in the family.

From the outside, you would never know the wealth of history and knowledge you might gain by walking in the door. The Gitche Gumee museum is a nicely painted and unassuming kind of place. Once inside there are agates, rocks, and a wonderful history of Grand Marais, Michigan. The best part of the museum is the owner, Karen, who knows... More
