Windmill Island Gardens is home to de Zwaan windmill, the last mill allowed to be transported from the Netherlands. de Zwaan still functions by grinding locally-grown grain into flour that is sold to visitors and local businesses. A highlight of visiting is a tour of this historic working windmill. Visitors can enjoy music from our antique Dutch street organ given to the City of Holland by the City of Amsterdam after World War II. Children can also ride on our antique carousel from the Netherlands. There are several other replica Dutch buildings and shops. The Island is home to beautiful gardens which feature tulips in the spring followed by beautiful annuals and perennials throughout the summer. Please note that the Island is open seasonally, April 15 - October 1, 2017. Last tickets sold at 5 pm.

We never expected to get a lesson on making flour, but that is exactly what we got! My favorite part of the gardens was the tour. Our guide knew everything there was to know about the process and the mill's history, so we learned a lot in a short amount of time. I wish we would have made it here... More

This was our 1st stop during "tulip time". Many different varieties of tulips and displayed such that we placed an order of 6 different kinds that will be shipped to us in the fall for planting. The windmill is a working Dutch mill still creating flour for limited distribution. You must take the tour, very interesting. At the end is... More

This place is beautiful especially during Tulip festival time. The model windmill is setup in the front in case you aren't lucky to take a good photo view of the actual windmill. The exhibits during the tulip festival weekend was fantastic and good to get to know a little bit of history on the dutch culture. They have nifty food... More

Drove over 5 hours to see. However, due to the extremely hot weather and the 35 mile an hour winds, there weren't any tulips to see (we came 2 days after the festival). Just saw lots of stems. While that was not the fault of the people who run the gardens, they should've been upfront about what we wouldn't see... More

Windmill Island is a treasure that the City of Holland has perfected in the middle of their city. You will feel like you are a world away from the hustle. Gardens are beautiful with lots of wonderful planting. Be sure to cross the bridges and visit the working Windmill. There is a beautiful carasol and nice little shops. Well worth... More

Not that much to see! Since it was the Festival time, the Island was understandably extremely crowded. Only one restroom for thousands of visitors and extremely long lines for all attractions which I felt were lacking. Don't go on Saturday unless you want to see the wonderful parade.

A must see during the Tulip Festival. We arrived early and had great parking about a minute walk to get a ticket. We we met by John a retired person from the Netherlands. We was informative and a pleasure to talk to. We had visited Amsterdam last spring so his background was much appreciated. The windmill is actually from the... More

The tulips at Windmill Island Gardens were spectacular! We were also able to climb up the working windmill, imported from Holland. It was fascinating to see and learn about the milling process. Besides tulips, there were lots of other lovely flowers, all around the grounds. We placed an order for some of the beautiful bulbs that we saw there. I... More

We took the Trolley tour plus which included a stop at Windmill Island Gardens. I've been to The Netherlands so I can vouch for the fact that it really looks like Holland. It was well kept and so pretty.

We arrived at the end of The Tulip Festival, last day to be exact, but still so beautiful !! Would definitely make this a stop again when in the area.
