The re-make of Fort Holmes is very well done. I recently viewed a vintage postcard of the fort and it closely resembles the original. I'm sure they will be adding more to it each year but we enjoyed it as it was. Definitely worth the trip.

Mackinac Island is more than fudge shops. One needs to explore and enjoy the rich history of the island. Fort Holmes is a part of that rich history.

First, I'm going to talk about the fort. Further on in my review, I'll detail the directions since we had to ask around for the best way to get there, and I couldn't find detailed info in any reviews. The fort was recently reconstructed (summer of 2015), and it looks really good. I never visited it before, so I can't... More

Everyone knows about Fort Mackinac. It's huge and right there when you arrive on the island. But I never knew there was another fort in the island. It's at the highest point on the island with a beautiful view. Small but an interesting story and it's free.

It's a bit of a hike of stairs to get to the fort, if starting from Rifle Range Road. The fort was recently restored, but honestly it's not much more than a wooden building surrounded by a log wall. The view was nice, and it was worth the hike. Don't expect much from the fort, however.

We took the horse taxi up and walked down on a very wet day. It was still a good view east and west from the island's plateau. A spectacular effort has been made to recreate this historic fort at it's original location.

We walked to Fort Holmes which offered shelter during a short rain storm. Take the time to read about the history of the fort while you're there.

This was our first visit to Fort Holmes since they rebuilt the fort. I think they did an excellent job recreating the fort. I also like the little plaques that detail the history. I was disappointed that we couldn't get up into the 2nd floor area. The views are pretty spectacular from Fort Holmes area. FYI it takes a lot... More
