The first floor has local history and the top floor has local photography, the history of Custer and war history. The local history is arrange in interesting displays. Unique items and their histories are noted in various cases. There is even an area for decoys. Every case seemed to have at least one thing that was out of the ordinary.
The only thing that would have made the experience better would be a tour guide that had some interesting bits to share.

Walking around Monroe and thought we would take in a museum. The Caretaker/Tour Guide was extremely polite, professional and quite knowledgable. Despite this being the historical accumulation of Monrow County, it was a very nice and great learning experience. My wife grew up in the Detroit area and never knew until this museum General G.A. Custer was from Monroe. We enjoyed the museum. They ask for a $5 donation which is on the honor system. It was worth the money.

We didn't expect much from the county museum. We were surprised how good and how much Custer things were there. The rest of the Museum was far above the usual county museum.

Great little museum full of area history and artifacts, notably the display on Gen. George Armstrong Custer. Doesn’t take your entire day to view and leaves you plenty time to visit other historic sites in the area, which is rich in military monuments and the new River Raisin National Park.

This museum is small, but it packs a lot of punch. There is an extensive George Custer exhibit. There are also exhibits about the various wars that Monroe residents have fought in including the Civil War. There are Native American and early French settler exhibits, as well as Depression era WPA/PWA art. Additionally there are rotating exhibits on various topics of interest. At Christmas they have a Christmas Tree exhibit with many different trees decorated by community groups or businesses. They also do a lot of educational programs with guest speakers or tours of the city.

Excellent history of General Custer on the second floor. Great artifacts, pictures, and notes of explanation.
Then we covered the first floor which was also good.
We spoke the two employees who readily answered our questions and showed a lot of knowledge of the history.

This beautiful old building is a museum itself ! It’s presents a flavor of the historical aspect of the area. There are a limited number of great displays, & items, from past centuries.

I've had this place in my mind to visit someday for a long time and finally went. I'm so glad I did. The building itself is a great structure and it's exterior can be deceiving as there is so much to see. Everything relates somehow to Monroe County (I visited as an out-of-towner) and the immediate area. There was a great exhibit pertaining to Gen. George Custer (did YOU know he had a connection to Monroe County, Michigan??). The museum was pretty empty when we went but the staff was very friendly. Admission was free but gratefully accepts contributions (please do so if you go). If you're near there and looking for something different to do, I'd highly recommend this hidden gem.
