My friends and I were there yesterday, and the person at the toll gate cursed at us for not knowing the difference between a metro and state park, mind you were all 17, and then threatened to give us a ticket as we turned around, and then did after hunting us down to another “part” of the lake. My mother called because i am underaged and they acted like they didn’t care that their employee does not have decent people skills and shouldn’t be working with the public. Ranger 14-2. (what’s on my “violation notice”.) they’re trying to charge me for a park pass at a park that had no toll booth. they chased us down from the one where they did have a toll booth, but we politely asked if we could just pull around and leave, because no one had money and that’s when she threatened to give us a ticket. so i will not be coming back. nor will i be advising anything to go there. for the simple fact that you get treated like you’re stupid.

Generally, we have great experiences camping at state parks. We enjoyed our stay at the Bruin Lake campground...although it felt like there were two different camping experiences available here!

The "lower" campground, by the lakefront, had a very modern and updated shower/bathroom building, lake views and access, and very much a friendly, open vibe. The downside is that there is very little shade in this area, so if that's important (or if it's very hot), the lower area may not be for you. However, we liked this area the best of the campground.

We had a spot on the "upper" campground, near the older shower house/restrooms. There was a much different "vibe" here (although admittedly extremely shaded). The shower house/bathroom itself, while being older, as also always crowded, and the bathroom and shower stalls seemed to be always dirty; they weren't nearly as clean as the lower level, and didn't seem to get the TLC that we see at other parks.

The grounds themselves were very good. There were several hiking trails....oh, yeah, and those chains of lakes!! Having access to kayaks on the chain of lakes this park sits around is incredible, providing a lot of opportunity to spend a LOT of time on the water!

Pinckney Rec is about 15 miles NW of Ann Arbor but can be quite hard to find without a decent map, as there are few signposts (if you go through Dexter, fork right at the sider stall, turn left at the next signals, then right at the Lakes Plaza). However it’s worth seeking out if you have some spare time in the area and fancy a place to jog, walk or just chill out. Visitors in winter still have to pay an admission fee, and for an out of state rental car with one person for one day this felt quite hefty, especially as the bathrooms were closed for the winter, and the only facility was – ahem – primitive. On the other hand, if you are a state resident and buy an annual pass it’s a superb deal.

Mostly it’s rolling deciduous woods with a network of paths – the park office will provide a map – leading down to a lakeshore. On a fine winter’s day it was peaceful, despite there being plenty of cars in the parking lot.

Bruin Lake campground is an awesome place to camp. I don’t live very far from it but camping there reminds you of being up north. Love it!!!!

There are lots of trails up and down the terrain through the woods. There are lakes to see also. The first thing to do is to stop by the building at 8556 Silver Hill Road to pick up a map of the area. We wandered around for a while, not knowing which way to go before we did this; and from then on, we were all set.

Decent camp ground lots of fun good sites. But its RIDICULOUS as humans and michiganders cannot possess our marijuana or use it when it's legal for 21 and older to possess and have 2 5 ounces without a card

My family enjoys this little lake. Great for a picnic and relaxing in an inner tube. The nice thing is that those with little ones can sit under a tree, as there's actually trees very close to the beach. My only complaint is that the new water play structure they created made this quiet little lake a little over-crowded some days.......

This is a sweet spot not far from Ann Arbor where you can enjoy nature and still have some amenities: snack bar, toilets, changing rooms, boat rental.
