Finished in 1908, this Lake Superior 39-room mansion enjoys a rare, intact collection of original furnishings and art. Because of that, it closely resembles the days when the Congdon family first occupied it. Truly, it is Duluth's answer to Downton Abbey.

Situated on a wooded lot, the home boasts spectacular views of Lake Superior, as well as, multiple gardens including formal, flower and vegetable. Guests are also encouraged to explore the carriage house, boat house, stone bridge and pier. Children enjoy the pebbled beach for hours of rock skipping while parents take in a sit on one of Adirondack chairs.

Be sure to check out Glensheen as part of your must-do Duluth bucket list.

This was my second visit over the years to Glensheen. The 'guides' were rather rude and condescending. The elf on a shelf was rather cheesy, but I guess kept kids entertained.

This mansion on Lake Superior is outstanding. It sits on seven acres of land is a grand example of 1908 opulence. The furnishings are original and so is most of the wallpaper. They are lovingly preserving this grand dame. Imagine 39 rooms, 15 bathrooms, 15 fireplaces and 4 floors. 90% of the original designs are intact, everything from furniture to... More

The buildings and grounds are beautiful and well maintained. There are different options for the types of tours. Such as self guided or full tours. We took a full tour and got to go on all three floors. Guides are very knowledgeable of the estates history.

We took the Full Mansion Tour and we were really glad we did. The full mansion included the guided tour of the upper two floors, plus the self-guided tour of the lower two floors and the grounds. We definitely felt the Full Mansion Tour was worth the extra money. Our tour guide was great and knowledgeable and all the guides... More

My wife and I arrived around 2 on a rainy and cold weekday. We were fortunate enough to have our tour guide all to ourselves. The mansion is very impressive and our knowledgeable guide did a great job of revealing all the details of the mansion and the family that had lived there. It's fantastic that this place is not... Take a look back into Americas gilded age. The university of MN has preserved and now runs this incredible house. Duluth was named the Zenith city and had more millionaires per capita than any other American city. It was at one time predicted to be larger than Chicago. This house will give you peak back into Duluth's glory days, it... More

We enjoyed the tour but wish we would have gone earlier in the day. With daylight savings time, the inside of the home gets pretty dark by the end of the 4 pm tour. I was impressed with the home but more impressed with the knowledge that Chris, our college student tour guide, had of the home and history. He... More

Chester and Clara Congdon's home was built between 1905-1908 costing $854,000 which would translate to around $21 million in today's money. There are 39 rooms, 15 bathrooms, 15 fireplaces on 4 floors. 90% of the original designs are intact and quite a few additional rooms have been made available for public viewing. We chose the 1.5 hour tour and our... More
