In november 2014 I visited the Mississippi delta South of New Orleans. There and then I decided I also wanted to see where this water comes from. When I got to Itasca State Park two years later, I was overwhelmed. What starts as a tiny creek out of Lake Itasca grows to be one of the worlds most majestic waterways... More

This iconic spot is a must see. Wade across shallow water. We visited in April and there were only a few people here.

Visited in Mid-August with my husband. Busy place, with plenty of people and a very cute but shirt boardwalk area.

My family had a great time here. The beauty was beyond worth the drive. We explored, trails, fell into the waters, skipped rocks and had a phenomenal day.

Go visitor center first, crowd will leave headwaters later in day. Bring your swimsuits and definitely rent bikes to tour the park!

The headwaters are a must see! We felt it had been dug out to be larger since visiting as kids. Many large rocks to cross the start of the river. Beautiful wetlands.

It's just water going down a little stream from a lake, but just think about it........this is the start of something grand......the Mississippi. Could be a nice quite spot to relax, but plan your trip around school field trips if you can. We got caught in between two of them and they were loud. I would hate to see this... More

Worth the trip. Having the chance to walk across the Midsissippi River is awesome. You can wade in and cross or you can cross over the rocks to stay dry. Trails are very nice as well.
