Built in 1927, the Chateau was one of the most elaborate theatres built in Rochester in the early 1900s. The exterior sunburst design marquee is lit with 636 light bulbs. Its unique French Village decor includes interior balconies and turrets and, on the ceiling, stars in the night sky. Refurbished in 1994, this elegant old theatre now houses a Barnes and Noble Bookstore and Starbucks Cafe.

Inspiring.

The Chateau has inspired numerous quests to save it. It is really special to the people of Rochester and when you visit, you'll see why. There's something magical about it.

I gave this a terrible rating only to call attention to the fact that the downtown Chateau Theater is not open, even as a bookstore, and has not been a movie theater for many many years. Paragon theater chain has taken the "Chateau" name for a northern 14 screen theater. Reviews are of "The Chateau" are of that.

as of may 2016 it appeared closed and there was no info displayed on the outside. Sign is illuminated at night and makes for a nice backdrop for pictures. The little plazza in front has a fountain with benches where you see Mayo staff and visitors taking their lunch on nicer days.

I really like this former theater, turned bookstore, turned who knows what is next. I never knew this building as a theater, but when it was a B & N Bookstore I enjoyed perusing books while I admired the very unique and decorative interior of this former theater. I could just imagine the shows that used to be put on... More

This is my favorite theatre in Rochester. I don't need all the frills of a bar and restaurant in the theatre. Keep the prices down and let me see a movie.

I went to this theater as a child- it was always so magical- can't wait to see what they will do with it now- you can view the outside- I don't think the inside is open at the current time.

The last tenant for this building was Barnes and Noble. The city has since bought the building and is contemplating next steps for Destination Medical Center (DM)

This was a great place to visit when it was a Barnes and Noble bookstore. You can probably only see the outside now.

This facility was changed into a bookstore but was closed in 2014. A Rochester, MN moves toward Destination Medical Center this facility will reopen for a new purpose.
