Penumbra Theater is celebrating it's 40th season. We saw August Wilson's play 'Jitney' this week and it was wonderful. I've been often enough to know the layout of the venue and I like it. Parking is very close by (and free) and the theater itself is intimate - we bought our tickets late but even sitting toward the back of... More

From the Recreation and Community Center feel to the outside of the Martin Luther King / Hallie Q. Brown Center, you might not realize the gem inside. Once you step inside, the colorful lobby and helpful staff greet you. Most recently, I went to the 2015 performance of their annual Black Nativity - as soulful a presentation of the meaning... More

I've seen a number of performances at the Penumbra and every one has been excellent. We are fortunate to have this highly regarded venue in our community. It provides a voice for African American stories that are important and relevant to to all. Recently saw the one-man performance, Rodney King. It was incredible. Masterfully done. Though this piece of history... More

My wife and I have been season ticket holders to the Penumbra for over 20 years. This very talented theater company never fails to enlighten us with another perspective on the struggles and triumphs of African-Americans as they contend with everyday life. We have been privileged to see all of Pulitzer Prize-winning August Wilson plays performed with great aplomb. Some... More

One of the most special places in St Paul, that is a jewel. We stopped by to learn about this African American theatre company and it was the highlight of our trip. We stayed for a reading of August Wilson plays ( Pulitzer Prize winner) and quite a few of us were emotionally moved by the play along with the... More

Our first time to this little gem was to preview the August Wilson documentary film. The theatre is part of a complex located just off Highway 94. There is a large prefunction space used, in this instance, for a bar and appetizers. The theatre itself is very well designed giving each seat perfect sight lines to the stage. The seats... More

Used to have season tickets, ( 8-9 years), but live 100 miles away now, but everything I saw there (except one) were very well done, I read, though, that funding is not what they hoped for... they also do things at the Guthrie.
