Shipwrecks from a mighty 1905 November gale prompted this rugged landmark's construction. Completed by the U.S. Lighthouse Service in 1910, Split Rock Light Station soon became one of Minnesota's best known landmarks. Restored to its 1920s appearance, the light station offers a glimpse of lighthouse life in this remote and spectacular setting. Split Rock Lighthouse is a National Historic Landmark.

After the Blueberry Festival in Ely, Minnesota we went to see the lighthouse. My husband and I have taken our kids when they were little and now we have taken our grandkids. They loved it. It really is impressive and if you see any advertising for vacations in Minnesota it probably includes a picture of this lighthouse. There is a... More

This is one of those places where the pictures don't disappoint. The lighthouse is pretty and has some good historical background. The grounds are well kept. There's a good hike with lots of stairs to climb to the bottom so you can take a good photo of the lighthouse. You can walk around the grounds also. The tour was okay.... More

Visited on annual Edmund Fitzgerald Memorial Beacon Lighting. Weather was unusually warm (60 degrees). Crowd was probably a couple hundred, and most gather around base of lighthouse at dusk for reading of names of lost crew when Fitzgerald sunk. Ceremony itself is very brief, but touring inside of lighthouse, seeing it be lit, and walking the grounds are worth visit... More

This lighthouse looks and feels as though it was on the coast. There is also a nice walking path down to the water and along the rocks that gives the area even more of a coastal feel. It's a short drive from Duluth and totally worth it.

This lighthouse is charming and offers great views of Lake Superior. There is a trail down to the lake as well that has a lot of stairs- a lot. But there are landings along the way with benches to take a break if you want. The lighthouse is fun, and the grounds offer great views.

The Split Rock Lighthouse is an impressive sight and the vista to the Lake Superior is spectacular. Even if it was raining when we visited it really was worth a visit.

A very moving event. The only day each year the beacon of the lighthouse is operational. Great photo op. Visitor center is awesome.

It was a wonderful, sunny day for a walk down by the water. Very windy from the Lake. $5 parking fee, worth it. Nice gift shop, too.
