In the early 1900s, the area that’s now Castlewood State Park was a popular retreat for partying St. Louisans. The dance clubs are gone, but the winding Meramec River and the lush valley that surrounds it remain. The park has hiking and mountain biking trails that range from those great for first-time riders to ones that even the most experienced will return to time after time. The park is considered one of the best mountain biking locations in the St. Louis area. Good fishing, broad meadows filled with wildlife, and plenty of recreational facilities make the park a favorite for people who want an adventure or just to get away.

First time out here and we didn't know what to expect. There are 4-5 hiking trails marked very well with color swatches pinned to the trees. We only did the one trail, but the other trails seemed similar as to eventually you ended up near the top of a big hill with a great view of the valley and river... More

Spent about two hours hiking up to the top of a hill, beautiful view overlooking the river. Definitely going back for fall foliage view.

Nice hike up theup the hill over the cliff then back down along the river. Beautiful view of the river from the top of the cliff. Watch out for bikers on part of the trail.

We really enjoy hiking the various trails at this park. On some trails you must be aware of cyclists but we've found them to be careful and courteous trail mates. A small stream runs through the park it can be nice to cool your feet in after a work out if that's your thing.

Wonderful county park for families, couples, and individuals. I have been here many times and in all seasons. Perfect trails for walking and running. You can also mountain bike here. Saturday and Sundays can be a bit busy. Easy to find your way around.

If you love nature and hiking you will love Castlewood State Park. It is along Meremac River. You can enjoy swimming and PWC riding. You should wear a life jacket because of the current.

Castlewood State Park is the site of an old resort and speakeasy from olden days. There are a few remnants of the grand staircase where people went down to the river to swim. Swimming is very dangerous at this location, but the trail up to the bluff is beautiful. If you're not in pretty good condition, there are many flatter... More

A little tough to find, but worth the effort. The main trail takes you up to the bluffs overlooking the Meramac River. While not overly crowded, you do need to be aware of bikers and joggers sharing the trail. Lots of good spots for picnics.

My friend bikes a lot at Castlewood, so I thought I'd take the dog and go see it. It is a very nice state park at the base of some high hills and along part of Meramec river. Lots of parking in many different spots. Playground area. Lots of trails of varying lengths. The largest parking area is at the... More
