In the early 1900s, the area that’s now Castlewood State Park was a popular retreat for partying St. Louisans. The dance clubs are gone, but the winding Meramec River and the lush valley that surrounds it remain. The park has hiking and mountain biking trails that range from those great for first-time riders to ones that even the most experienced will return to time after time. The park is considered one of the best mountain biking locations in the St. Louis area. Good fishing, broad meadows filled with wildlife, and plenty of recreational facilities make the park a favorite for people who want an adventure or just to get away.

There is a lovely area at the top of the bluffs. If it is cloudy you can actually sit above the clouds.

The park is nice. My average review is not due to the picnic areas or walking trails as those are exactly what you would want out of a park experience. I just always look for more elevation gains in my park experiences. I will say...More

My family loves to bike here. There are easy portions of the trail and many portions that are challenging.

In the past, I would have rated at a 5. In the past 3-4 yrs, the park has become so overrun with people that it’s no longer my peaceful place. The trails are too congested to really move. It makes me sad. Castle wood was...More

The views are beautiful, I love to run, hike, walk my dog here, a great photo op. Watch out for snakes and parking can be difficult but I will always love hiking here.

Something for everyone. Hiking, biking or fishing in the river, pavilions and kids playgrounds-this park is great for young and old and your fur babies will love it too!

This park is a gem. Nestled south of Ballwin along the Meramec River, Castlewood is great place to walk, hike, have a picnic or an outdoor meeting. Plenty of shelters and facilities, although not recommended for swimming. I believe swimming is prohibited. If not, it...More

I've seen many people play in the river but I do not let my children swim or wade in the Meramec. It is dangerous because of the undertow that will drag you under . Between 2004 and 2016, twelve people drowned.

I believe it’s the one on Left as you come into the park about 1/2 mike from the visitor center. Stop at the building at the entrance and there are maps of the park.

The floods mostly come in Spring. Mostly. October should be relatively safe. I don't recall the park flooding at any time during Autumn, at least not during recent history.
