Visit a significant part of German-American history – and early Missouri settlement – at Deutschheim State Historic Site. Stroll through the restored 1840s and 1850s buildings and explore how German-Americans settled the Hermann area and developed the basis for a Missouri wine industry. Grapevines planted in the 1850s can still be seen on the property as can a number of historic artifacts.

We took the 10:30 am tour. The woman giving the tour was so knowledgeable about the German families who settled in Hermann. We could have listened to her stories much longer. She was so interesting. There were 6 of us on the tour which made it more personal. This truly was the highlight of our trip.

This was one of the attractions we really wanted to spend some time in. However, when we got there, we were informed they weren't giving tours that day. Surprising as traffic had an uptick with the number of people in for the Christmas Fest. We were allowed to go into the first floor of one home. There was a period... More

My expectations were low when we walked past the historic site as you never know what you will find. My wife and I were pleasantly surprised at what we saw and learned from the very helpful staff. Thank you!!!

A wealth of information is available on the early German settlers and their life-styles. A modest entrance fee is charged. We have made this stop multiple times and always learn something new.

If you have German roots in Missouri, this group of historic sites has plenty to offer. Visit the German language printing press, an early winery, am historic home, a museum with lots of books and information on early German sellers. The sites are easily accessible and very interesting for the history buff.

Get a little bit of local history and some interesting stories. $5 was worth it. There is a little bit of walking between houses and stair climbing. Definitely not handicap accessible.

The staff was excellent and engaging. We took the tour of homes which gave us a real look at life in the early days of Hermann.

This is worth the $5, we learned so much during this tour and enjoyed it! It was about an hour and a half but you go through so much during your walking tour.

We took the 10:00 am tour as soon as they opened. Linda was our tour guide and she was enthusiastic and knowledgeable. We toured the garden and two buildings of early Hermann days. One was from a wealthier resident piano maker and one was a middle-class printer and wine-maker. Both were authentic representations of the early history of the town.... More
