The 358,000-square-foot Harley-Davidson Vehicle and Powertrain Operations in Kansas City, Mo. was built in 1998 and provides free tours or extended Steel Toe Tours. Kansas City employees produce the Sportster®, Dyna®, StreetTM and V-Rod® families of motorcycles, along with select Softail® models, from fabrication and finishing through final assembly to include the liquid-cooled Revolution® and Revolution XTM powertrains for the V-Rod and Street families. The tour center features a series of displays that guide you through the various manufacturing and assembly processes. You'll also have the chance to sit on current production motorcycles and visit the gift shop, which features tour-related souvenirs. Your tour experience begins with an introductory video. Then it's on to the factory floor where you'll witness a wide range of operations from welding, laser-cutting and frame-bending, to polishing and assembly. You'll see fenders and fuel tanks being formed, newly painted frames hanging on the line, and sophisticated robotic welding technology. You'll also see the Revolution® powertrain assembled from crankcase to cylinder heads.

A nice tour and it is free. The tour takes about an hour, but groups are small, so they fill up quickly. No photos allowed in the factory. A nice touch is that each person is given a little ear speaker, so easy to hear...More

Very interesting and informative tour of the HD Assembly plant where the company's Dyna, Sportster and Street models are made. There are two tours, the basic free tour and the more in depth "steel toe " tour. Die hard fans with more time on their...More

Was in the area and seen that you could tour the building. Checked out what was available at the time, the tour was shorter than normal with stuff going on in the factory but still had a great time. Also checked out the gift shop.

We didn't get to see much of the facility. Since they were rolling out 2017 models,so all we got to tour was the paint room, one assembly line, and a brief description. But all-in-all it's understandable. Still a little let down, though.

Tour consists of a 5 minute video, a quick walk past the cafeteria, another video of the paint room, and that's about it. Things you actually get to see: A few stamping presses off to the right on the walk, and a brief glimpse of...More
