The 358,000-square-foot Harley-Davidson Vehicle and Powertrain Operations...

The 358,000-square-foot Harley-Davidson Vehicle and Powertrain Operations in Kansas City, Mo. was built in 1998 and provides free tours or extended Steel Toe Tours.

Kansas City employees produce the Sportster®, Dyna®, StreetTM and V-Rod® families of motorcycles, along with select Softail® models, from fabrication and finishing through final assembly to include the liquid-cooled Revolution® and Revolution XTM powertrains for the V-Rod and Street families.

The tour center features a series of displays that guide you through the various manufacturing and assembly processes. You'll also have the chance to sit on current production motorcycles and visit the gift shop, which features tour-related souvenirs.

Your tour experience begins with an introductory video. Then it's on to the factory floor where you'll witness a wide range of operations from welding, laser-cutting and frame-bending, to polishing and assembly. You'll see fenders and fuel tanks being formed, newly painted frames hanging on the line, and sophisticated robotic welding technology. You'll also see the Revolution® powertrain assembled from crankcase to cylinder heads.

We did the Steel Toe Tour and it was fantastic. The take home goodies you get with the tour, make the price VERY cheap. The tour guide was very good and had a lot of information. Very well organised. Even if your not a Harley enthusiast, it is stil worthwhile having a look. They also conduct free tours.

nno where did it say reservations were required so we spent an extra night in a poor motel instead of being in Branson mo. also times for tour isn't what the website or advertisement stated. manager was very rude and argumentative. won't go back because of the very limited spots on the tour plus I called MY Harley dealer told... This was a very compelling tour of the Harley Davidson manufacturing facilities. Be sure and get there early, the tours book up fast.

Attention to detail is top priority in this plant. Pressure is on workers to produce an excellent product and they do a great job. Sometimes it was difficult to hear over the high noise level in the work areas. The tour guide did an excellent job. If only I were 20 years younger I would be picking bugs out of... More

Tour was a lot of fun. Takes about an hour. You can see many things up close like robots, welding, assembly, steel forming. Guide answers questions. Can sit on the bikes in the reception/gift shop area. Free postcards at the end of the tour.

This was a nice start to our morning. My husband and I both enjoyed our tour very much. Everyone went out of there way to make sure we had an enjoyable time. They have a great tour and you actually get to see the real thing. We are going to go back next time we're in K.C.

Unfortunately, we visited when areas that are normally open on the steel-toed tour were not accessible so we did the free tour instead. It was very interesting and you can tell their employees like to work there. Our guide was knowledgeable and made it fun.

You can certainly opt to take the paid $30 tour but the free tour is just as good and is fun and informative especially if you have a mild interest in the motorcycles. If you are looking for more indepth info, do the paid tour where you can get more into the production areas. Very easy to get to from... More

I took my Harley-Davidson loving boyfriend on the tour for his birthday. I don't have an interest in motorcycles but the production process and information given by the guide kept my attention. I was not bored. For $35, we got a 2 1/2 hour tour of a working motorcycle plant, an orange safety vest with the HD emblem on the... More

It was really nice to visit the factory. The staff is really friendly. We had a great time and will definitely love to buy one of those in the future. The story of this brand is amazing and it proves that if you have a passion and if you work hard, you can do whatever you like in life. Would... More
