People called Oliver Anderson’s house “the best arranged dwelling house west of St. Louis.” But it became more famous as the center of a bloody three-day Civil War battle in 1861. Walk through the Anderson House at Battle of Lexington State Historic Site and marvel at the bullet holes still in the walls and evidence of the cannon shots. The battlefield is peaceful now, dotted with orchards and gardens, but battle scars remain. A visitor center provides a comprehensive view of the battle that raised Southern spirits that the war was winnable and made Unionists in Missouri think twice about whether they could hold the state. The site is located in the town of Lexington and is one of the closest Civil War sites to Interstate 70.

I loved this site. Our tour guide for the house was great. This is primarily a confederate site. The movie is very good with narrating facts in a personal and understandable way. The house is a great Greek style revival home. The bullet holes all...More

Personally I love history and appreciate the opportunity to experience and try to envision the events that took place at the site I am visiting. The battlefield is interesting, but it is a little underwhelming. There are a couple of signs on the field explaining...More

The Lexington SHS is worth the visit if you're in the area. The site offers a 20 minute movie that tells the story of the 1861 Battle of Lexington as well as a small museum/interpretative center, both of which are free. I didn't have time...More

We stopped in to the State Park Battlefield along the way to KC. They have done a good job of preserving the battlefield. The museum discusses more than the battle. The times, the lives of the people in the area are presented accurately in displays...More

First stop on a backroads driving trip. Nice site in the middle of nowhere. Didn’t realize the significance of this location to Civil War until we stopped. Very good movie to introduce this site and events. Then an opportunity for guided tour through original home...More

Although I have been to other civil war battlefields, the unique character of this battle intrigues me. Watch the short video and tour the museum for sure! If you have time and spare cash, definitely take the tour of the house! Not a huge site,...More

First of all, this site is just beautiful. The museum is very well done, the house itself (and the grounds) are lovely, and the old downtown of Lexington is just gorgeous, with all the antebellum homes. Make sure, after going through the museum, to take...More
