Memphis has fewer than 2,000 residents, yet somehow there are enough volunteers to keep this complex in great condition. They have repair and improvement projects every year. With multiple buildings they are able to house all sorts of displays, from small household items to transportation of a past era. Ella Ewing is a big draw because she was truly a giant, and her story of adapting to her height is amazing. I have a remote connection to her; a great uncle married a niece of the man who helped her get into "show business" so she could earn money to build a home built for her size and for other needs. There are many objects to understand the rural surroundings of Memphis, the farming and the settling of Scotland County. I have toured the complex twice and want very much to attend the fall event, which I hope will happen again. Much preparation goes into that!

This historic home and railroad depot complex in Memphis, Mo, is filled with displays, artifacts, photos, historic items, buildings, and statues that celebrate the local history of Memphis, Scotland County, and the surrounding area. Of particular interest are the items and displays on Ella Ewing, the Missouri Giantess, who lived near Gorin, Missouri, in the early 1900s. The old depot building and a new carriage house provide room for larger items, like a buggy and farm implements. Recently, a WWI-era statue honoring a young soldier was moved to the complex. I always notice something new every time I visit. This museum is great for young people who have never seen historical items such as these, and for older people who remember what they were. You are encouraged to leave a donation to support the museum, but I don't think there is a set price to enter. Open to the public April through Labor Day 1:00 p.m. to 4:00 p.m. Tuesdays, Wednesdays, and Thursdays or by appointment

We were pleasantly surprised at how much we enjoyed touring this old home and seeing all the interesting displays as well as the architecture of the home. Every room has a door to the outside. We were the only two there on a weekday afternoon. Our tour guide was very pleasant and knowledgable about the history of the home and the town. I especially enjoyed learning about the Missouri "giantess" Ella Ewing who lived there when the house was used as a hotel. She was originally from a nearby Missouri town. My husband enjoyed the room with all the war memorabilia displays. We chose not to see the train depot and other building due to time restraints so I can't tell you anything about that.

Hopefully you will have a chance to return one day to see the other buildings.
