Explore a significant part of U.S. history when you visit the Old Courthouse, which was built between 1839 and 1862. Tour this architectural masterpiece with restored courtrooms and experience a time and place where Dred and Harriet Scott sued for their freedom and Virginia Minor fought for women’s right to vote. Through special exhibits, learn about St. Louis’ role in early settlers’ movement into western America. At the Old Courthouse Gift Shop, choose from a wide selection of books, videos, apparel and educational toys related to St. Louis and African-American history. Located just two blocks from the Arch (7 blocks walking distance during construction), the Old Courthouse is serving as the temporary Ticketing and Visitor Center for the Gateway Arch during construction.

The old coirthoise in St. Louis Missouri has columns and frontage with a grecian influence. A lovely period building.

The word "Dred" is misspelled in the review title because this deep piece of history is dedicated, in large part, to the legal battle of Dred Scott and his family to be lifted from the category of property to that of human being. It took...More

I am sure many tourists overlook this spot. It has some history in there aside from the Dred Scott case. Talk to a NP ranger and learn a little about the building after you see the exhibit.

Besides the building and ticket office for all Arch activity, the exhibits from the museum of Westward Expansion, Lewis and Clark, to the story of Dred Scott are beautifully presented and educational. Our 9,8,7 yr. grandkids were very engaged.

This is the place you go to buy your tickets for the arch. But after that the history on the walls is wonderful. The dome is fabulous!. Take your time and read the history. Very informative. The gift shop is very nice.

Parking isn't cheap. I don't know about street parking/meters, but the ramps can be expensive. Weekends may be cheaper (at least they are in Minneapolis), but I don't know about St. Louis. I'm sure there is a web site for... More
